Because that is exactly what everyone in Terraria truly is; a tiny, uncomprehending nat that tries its hardest to stay alive, but in the end gets swatted away by a larger beast, or overwhelmed by thousands of little critters... I like how this picture displayed that to me.

Well, just think about how ridiculously hard that would be. You would need to hand-draw every single frame as a drawing, and then convert that into whatever programming that Terraria uses, and then the game would be REALLY laggy due to the high graphics.
DL;DR, Graphics =/= better game.
