Yes i agree,it must be perfect light to get realistic bumps on material (snow),for that snow looks like snow and not like some plastic mass on mountain..

Yeah i agree,i try many snow scenes but they are not been so realistic.I think that in this picture everything was turn in right direction so because of that mountain look realistic.Also atmosphere settings are quite important..

Thank you fractal,terrain is made in worldmachine,this is one of my oldest scene so i decided to render out.Mixed only two materials and played with slope and environment tab.I recommend to try worldmachine,it is amazing software with lots of options..
