Description My third daily sketch (in a series of five) based on still references from Disney's Fox and the Hound.

Not crazy how this one turned out... the pose was definitely a little more difficult for me to interpret as in the scene Tod is supposed to be yawning in a basket. The expression looks kind of unnaturally forced though. Also a hand was covering up his right ear, and the lower body was cradled in a cloth. Since I removed these elements and guestimated what would have been there, he also appears a bit... disproportionately chubby.

Since I really don't have any experience sketching anything but front-on poses (and even then...), I thought I'd try to block out shapes intially, and you can still traces of that in the head, but I ended up erasing the rest of the body as he quickly gained twice his natural girth with my miss-apportioned outline... not a pretty sight. Consequently, the head is the only remaining piece of the geometric outline, and it probably should have been scrapped as well; there is too much space on his left side of the face.

Finally, the tail looks a bit flat, and the 'cheeks' I really kind of cheated on...

I plan on 'finishing' (more or less) one of these five sketches on the weekend, but this probably is not going to be it. It was an interesting trial though.

As a side note, I ended up doodling the last sketch (Tod Cub 3) in my planner during Pysch, and was amazed at (1) How much easier it is to do using real paper and pencil, and (2) How accurately I was able to recollect the figure without any reference. By god, this exercise might actually be working...
