I wanted to do a screencap redraw of my favorite Knouge moment from Sonic Adventure 2. I'm usually not a huge fan of the whole 'guy saves the girl and now she likes him' trope, it usually feels super contrived and just kind of a tired gimmick used to make the girl character like the male character after they've been at odds with each other for the entire story, but something about this one felt different to me, and I'm not entirely sure why.

Like one could easily argue that Knuckles saved Rouge just because she had the pieces of the Master Emerald on her, which is a completely sound argument. But something about the way he gently helps her back onto the platform, how they just hold hands for a moment and try to process what just happened, just feels very natural to me. The fact that Rouge doesn't pull a 180 and immediately trust him also feels in-character, she pulls away and accuses him of wanting to hold her hand. Just that moment of vulnerability for both of them is so good. And the fact that Knuckles clumsily apologizes to her at the end of it is just the icing on the cake. All in all, a very good character-building moment for both of them.

In my headcanon, this isn't quite the very first moment where they fall in love, but rather the first in a series of events that led to them falling in love. A catalyst basically, hence the title (hah I said the title, roll credits). Years down the line, I could see them both looking back at this moment fondly. Knuckles admits that a tiny part of him thought she was pretty even back then, and Rouge may have found him just the tiniest bit charming as well. Basically they're just two dorks in love and I adore them
