Description based off of last year's guide:
dragons-stuff.deviantart.com/a…

I felt I had to revisit this one in particular as I didn't quite cover all that needed to be said.
Now before I go into detail, please be aware, especially if I have linked you to this guide
This guide is not to personally attack or downgrade anybody in particular or any general group of people.
I created these guides with the full intention of offering a type of visual aide in what the general community of deviant art deems acceptable.
Of course, you are absolutely free to your own opinion and take on this, you are not forced to change your views or remove your deviations,
but it's here to help you understand what we, as an adoptable community, view worthy of purchase.

So first up are the Dollmakers again:
if you haven't noticed already, a lot of "starting out" adoptable creators use these as they are honestly more or less fun.
I'll admit to using them back in the day during school or when bored. In fact, I still occasionally use human ones to get a vague idea of a character I've created.
However, I don't believe that they were worth any value at all. You see, for most "maker games" it's just point and click, select the colour for a certain area of the body and click to change some body shapes. Maybe there's a few drag and drops (whoa, goin crazy!), but normally that's about it. It's fun to waste time with, but I don't see
how you should be making any sort of profit when most literally have a "random" feature where with just the click of one button, you get a premade design that people sell.
Besides, why should you get a profit from this? Even if it's just Deviant Art Point or some other site currency, it's still lazy.
The original artist and creator of the game should be making the money right? After all, all you did was just click a button.

Next is the overlaped images:
sure some do look pretty cool, I mean who doesn't want a space t-rex or a woman made of gravy? But even if you spent maybe five or so minutes finding the right image to steal from google images and had to load up some cheesy art program like gimp or PS, then find some cheap or free base to slap the picture on, is it really worth it? Personally I view the entire process as theft, as all you've done is just google search a picture, put it on another picture and #art . Of course you may use images you've gotten the rights to, or maybe you took the photo yourself, but it's still completely lazy. I get it, some designs do look cool like that, but unless you do it all by hand, there's honestly no point. If you don't put in the time and effort then you shouldn't be allowed to collect a profit. That's like somebody taking your lunch and then another person's lunch and saying it's theirs and they created the Mega-Lunch. (that does make me hungry for some Mega-Lunch tho)

Finally is what I like to call the Underaged Kid Who Doesn't Try:
i'm not here to be a dick (most of the time). I do generally try and offer advice and point people in the right direction. I'll be absolutely civil and kind, but I keep noticing these ugly things popping up. First of all, allow me to say, I did this too. Oh god did my art suck. It still sucks. In all honesty go ahead and point and laugh at my very first account if you want
sweet jesus did I suck.
The thing is though, this type of adoptable is not only worthless in value, it's terrible. You literally spent maybe under a minute defacing a great base to try and get some kind of desperate attention from the community or profit. Like I said, I've been there, I used to colour outside the lines when I was a child too, but have a little fucking pride guys. Take an extra minute and make sure it looks presentable. If you're unsure how to colour a base in a certain program or how to create a unique look, then ask somebody for help. Don't be that guy sitting in the corner with the bad art insulting people offering to help. Honestly, it really pisses me off how many people do get defensive about their terrible colouring when you try and be polite and actually differ from their normal feedback and say that it could be better. There's a difference to being attacked and receiving constructive criticism. I do know, that due to maybe a physical handicap or mental disability or lack of interest, some people are not as good at art as others. That's ok, nobody will ever be better than the person their revere. I think my art is still quite low at the bottom of the ladder compared to some people on here, but the thing is, you have to at least try. No bullshitting and lying, saying your shitty colouring took you 8 hours, no whining that somebody actually offered to take time out of their day to help you. Make the effort and you'll reap the benefits. Take the time to learn and grow and you'll be better.

Like I said, I'm not normally here to insult people. I actually like my little corner of DA, where there are some friendly chums with nice advice. I'm just trying to branch out and help people as well. Would you rather get dozens of comments saying "wowe, gr8 jobbb!!11!" or would you honestly take some real constructive criticism that can help you improve?
At the end o the day, it is ultimately your choice.

If you'd like to get into adoptable creating, I suggest you take a look at the following people and examples to get an idea of what direction you'd like to head in.

for the second one, what if you actual painstakingly make an adopt like it without pasting an image? Like say I have a character with markings, and those markings have that galaxy look to it? From a project in the 8th grade, we were told to make a book about the life of stars, and making a galaxy is the most time consuming thing ever, like I wouldn't even use that to torture my worst enemy xD

obviously if you drew the image yourself that's fine

I agree alot with this highly. I do buy adopt designs from people occasionally but I look for aleast effort put into them and interesting designs, deviantart is the worse place to look cause people are looking for an easy way to make money on as little effort as possible and its frustrating as a buyer and as an artist. thank you dragons, for making this it was badly needed.

ugh yes it's difficult to find decent designs in a respectable price range.

The worst problem is that people buy these things.. And after that even if I do a really good designs for adoptables, it's quite hard to sell them...

I rant about this all the time. X.x I even see people shelling out real money for them! And dreamselfy/ recolor.me shit as well. It's really annoying.. I don't allow them in my group but they still get in somehow smh

What's worse is that sometimes they don't mention they used some kind of maker so the buyer has no idea they could have literally gone and made the character themselves for free

I have a condition that affects my hands in such a way, I can't pick up a pencil properly.

like i said, conditions are fine, when it's based around pure laziness, that's when there's a problem.

so maybe adoptable making isn't for you then?
I've rummaged through your gallery and you seem like a fairly young person just by your general content and how you talk
Plus almost every image you've uploaded, you've failed to properly credit the original artists or the stock you've used.
Even if you have a "condition" it doesn't mean you still can't credit people where it's due.

Dragonells In reply to HappyVibez [2016-11-28 14:52:10 +0000 UTC]

then it's even worse. You're not trying, you're just being lazy.

Make shitty designs, but don't upload them.
(have to elaborate on this)
If it's with your own artwork and it's purposely done for the intention of humour then that's fine.

Yeah, I could see maybe doing them. It looked like you got a lot of feedback, and pointed some people in the right direction (even if some people took it a little too personally)
