I was randomly browsing artwork and noticed someone had attempted to render their character in 3d so I tried it myself. I'v not used Maya since early March for my classwork, but this is the first time I'v used it for something just for myself and not to be graded/for a uni project.

Took maybe I'd say an hour and a half/2 hours, but time really flies by when I use Maya. I'v never been one for working from a sketch, planning my 3d models out or use any special techniqe for working on my models, I just 'wing it' but people seem to like my results. For a while I was tutouring other classmates on using this program even though I was the one who was basically ingoring the ' prefered techniqes' for creating a 3d model and just 'winging it', eg, eyeing up a quick sketch and just going for it. I didn't even use a reference for this, heh.

If I'm the mood I'll carry on with this but I'm very pleased with the face so far, it's always nice to see a pleasing result after a few hours of frenzied clicking, heh.

It's obviously unfinished and unrendered but that will be fixed up later hopefully

Awesome! Looking really good so far.

I stink in 3-D programs. Alls I know how to do now is put basic shapes together.

As stated before, I'm not very technically minded with Maya, I find it much harder to follow tutourials and such. I just reccomend getting a good mental picture of what you want to make and just dive into the program.

Those are primitives, right? Not going to Subdivs or NURBS?

In all honesty I'm not very technially minded with Maya so I couldn't tell you. I ususally just start out with a sphere or whatever I'm compelled to use and just start extracting and deleting faces and edges. I always use the 'append to polygon' tool a lot. I can't really explain how I work in Maya, I just seem to let my hands do their own thing while thinking 'why am I doing this exactly?', but I always seem to get results people like.
