Description
Okay, so! From my little announcement about a week ago, most of you know that I’m planning to post the scripts of my Maddy & Match comic idea, plus a drawing with each chapter (the chapter itself will be posted to my Sta.sh but will be linked with the drawing). Though, before we get to the actual chapters, I’d like to start off with some stuff that should lay down the baseline of the timeline/setting of the comic.
Mainly it’s to clarify some events and stuff, since I’m not following just one continuity. It’ll be mostly based on the games, though also the episodes of the anime before Axess. Basically I’m just combining what I like so I can have more fun building off of it. :> To quote part of the original script I had for the intro:
“I know I don’t have to do that, I could just say “Screw it” and do it without explaining, but I like having some sort of basic consistency and a definitive basis to work with. I tend to plan out and set up stories better that way anyways.”
Before I get into that though, this drawing I did is a quick little clean-up based on one of the panels I had thumbnailed for what was basically six introduction pages, explaining what MegaMan Battle Network is briefly before going into the baseline I mentioned earlier. Since most of you following me already know about Battle Network, I’ll just skip over that and explain the baseline.
(Though if you’re not already a fan and are a little curious, here is the Wikipedia article for a decent summary for convenience, and here is a link to the MegaMan Battle Network article on the Mega Man Knowledge Base, if you wanna start looking into the series further!)
Anyways, yeah, here’s the baseline that I’ll be working with:
- For the timeline which will be used for my fan comics, I’m replacing the first and second games with the first series of the anime. That’s basically everything before Axess (i.e. everything before the anime turned into a sentai show, and thus before I started enjoying it less).
- Those episodes before Axess more or less follow the games, with the same villains, similar scenarios, and so on. So of the 56 episodes of the original series, that’s episodes 1 through 25 acting as BN1, episodes 26 through 31 filling in the break between the original BN1 and BN2, and then episodes 32 to 56 being BN2.
- Though there are a few changes needed in order to make the transition from the first anime series (which I’ll be referring to as just ‘the anime’ from now on) into the third game (and then the rest of the games) more smoothly.
- First, assume that the whole DNA thing with MegaMan/Hub gets directly explained. I’m making this an explicit thing because the anime actually never got into that. I think it may have implied it at one point or another, but I’m pretty sure they never outright admit it. It’s a pretty important plot item several times in the games, so probably should keep it in.
- Sean is still Kid Grave, a.k.a the leader of Grave (or Gospel, as they were known in BN2) in the second half of the anime. No “just a robot piloted by Bass” nonsense. Admittedly the only reasons I’m doing this is because he makes a short appearance in the third game, and I do honestly feel disappointed that he never got to play a role in the anime (although he kinda-sorta got ‘replaced’ by Tory, in a way…?)
- I’d think Wily would still usurp Sean like he did to Kid Grave in the anime though, because hey, why not?
- Episode 54 (33 in the English dub), where Chisao is introduced, doesn’t actually happen in this timeline-thing I’m using. This is because he’s introduced in BN3, so I’ll just keep that original meeting instead of the anime one.
- Likewise, episode 55 (52 in the English dub) also doesn’t happen here. This is because the type of PET that’s released at the end gets introduced in BN4. Since my timeline-thing goes from the anime to the rest of the games, it’d be awkward to go from announcing/releasing new PETs at the end of the anime, to sticking with the old ones for BN3, and then switching back to the new ones for BN4 and onwards.
- For my comics, TorchMan will get to keep his English dub name. There’s something about “FireMan” that makes it sound weak to me, honestly. Plus, his head reminds me of an actual metal torch, so I feel the dub name is more fitting.
- And I admit, I grew up with the English anime dub, and thus with the name “WackoMan” for the loveable color clown. But honestly, his English game name ended up growing on me more. So he’ll be referred to as ColorMan in the comics.
- While Maddy still causes traffic accidents, for this timeline she also gets to do something like the ending bit of her scenario from the games, where the accidents end up involving Maylu. Not threatening to blow up a bus, but maybe a runaway bus situation.
- Basically this is like Maddy figuring out Maylu is someone special to Lan, and messing with the two of them to stop the blue twins from getting in World Three’s way. Mainly I’m doing this because Maddy didn’t feel as dangerous in the anime as she does in the game.
- However, I can’t let Maddy keep the exact same scenario as in the games, because it contradicts her “Grave Member for a Day” episode where she stands against Gauss for going too far with trying to kill Lan and company. I gotta draw a line somewhere, y’know?
- Speaking of Maddy, for the comics she goes by “Ms. Madd” on the job like in the games, but then is referred to as Maddy by her friends. So basically “Ms. Madd” is like a codename.
- There will be no nonsense about ElecMan being deleted and sacrificed for the sake of deleting MagnetMan at the same time. I hate, hate, hate that this happened in the anime, because looking back on it now I can tell it was just a cheap way to try and repeat the dramatic success they probably got when TorchMan was deleted and then revived as HeatMan. Because seriously, there’s no other reason for doing that, and then having no damn explanation for ElecMan reappearing in the later anime seasons!! So instead, ElecMan and MagnetMan fight to a stalemate where they fought until they made each other log out (or something like that) instead of outright deletion.
- TorchMan and HeatMan were kinda-sorta combined in the anime, and for my timeline they’ll eventually split apart in the time between the end of the anime and before BN3. There will actually be a whole chapter for this, so stay tuned!
- For the sake of the timeline, any games with two versions will just be assumed to be combined into one “event” on the timeline. So a quick overview: all tournament battles in BN4, both Team ProtoMan and Team Colonel existing at the same time (maybe Lan and MegaMan join both as part time members), and all teachers/crosses in the BN6 games are all canon in my comics.
- Also this isn’t really related to making the transitions and timelines work together, but I’m having “Yahoot” be a codename/work name/alias to hide true identity/etc, much like Ms. Madd. The character’s real name will be mentioned at some point in the comics as Maha Jarma, which was his name in the original Japanese series. Honestly I just think it sounds way cooler than “Yahoot”!
Speaking of names on that last point, the importance of names ended up becoming a major theme in the comics! Well, it probably won’t get to be super-important or obvious until a lot of the much later chapters, but hopefully I can get there! Actually, related to that, admittedly pretty much everything on Lan’s board in this drawing is stuff that will only become relevant in the sequel comics. That’s… gonna be a long wait. But hopefully I can get to those someday too!!
Anyways, yeah, that’s about it for the baseline of my comics! Some of this stuff, admittedly, might not ever be brought up in the comics. And I do have some sequel stuff after this main Maddy & Match comic that hopefully I will get to in some form someday… but hey, it’s good to at least have a baseline of events and rules in case it does get brought up! :>
So hope some of you will be looking forward to the first chapter! I will be reading over it again to proofread it before posting it, not to mention drawing the ‘cover art’ for it, but I am hoping (very hoping!!) to post the first chapter within the next week or two. See you then!

Holy shit, this is very complicated This is going to be interesting to read!
Also, as much as I enjoy working with the scene where Elecman got deleted with Magnetman (cuz from a story standpoint, it's juicy conflict-source), I can understand why it sucks.
