Description
I support cerebral Palsy awareness and research. It's a shame that in this day and age, there are people that still don't know about this disorder. Some common misconceptions:
Cerebral Palsy is caused before, during, or shortly after birth. You cannot catch it. (It is caused by oxygen loss to the brain. )
CP does not affect a person's intelligence as the damage is mostly done in the area of the brain that controls body movement, speech etc. [It basically affects muscle control and movement. Things of that nature. Seizures can also occur with some people.
With CP it varies from person to person. One person can have a real mild case (only affecting the legs, etc) and another could have it so bad that they can't even feed themselves.
People with CP can do anything a person without CP can do. They just might do it in their own unique way.
They are not freaks, they are people, just like me and you. Just because they are a little different, it does not mean they should be shunned from others or from activities. They want to participate just as much as you do.
And don't underestimate a person with CP, they can do more then you think.
Anyway, I hope this stamp made you understand this condition a little more.
Feel free to use this stamp. Thank you.

Cerebral palsy AFAIK is quite well-known.
However, it's often not well-portrayed.
In the UK, a kids show in the 80's tried to raise awareness about it using a man with spastic cerebral palsy, and instead kids started turning it into a cruel joke, eventually causing the term "spastic" to be as offensive as "retard" there.
In the USA, there's no association between "spastic" and cerebral palsy, but Family Guy did poke at cerebral palsy (much like they poke at anything sensitive).

Not sure what AFAIK stands for but thanks for the comment. I agree, CP is pretty much horribly portrayed, and when it is it's typically a joke (family guy). But, one good portrayal is Walter jr from Breaking Bad.

I have CP too, and one of the hardest things for me is pwople thinking i'm dumb because of a physical disability, and dyring gym im not included as kuch as i want to be and i have to do a lot of alternate things but luckily i can take a friwnd or two with me. Ive gone from not being aboe to walk independently (i had a walker) to now walking independently, although i only had a walker for a year when i was first diagnoised, before i was diagnoised i could walk but fell CONSTANTLY, and almost every doctor said "shes just delayed, she will catch up" but i never did, the. I started physical therapy and my physical thwrapist actually diagnoised me, and then igot a formal doctor diagnoisis soon after.i went undiagnoised for 3 years of my life though.

Hi there. I'm sorry to hear you've been bullied.
*hugs* I know it's hard but try your best to ignore them, they're just clueless really. Or if they're persistent maybe try explaining your condition to them if they're willing to listen. Maybe that will help with the teasing.
But anyway, I'm glad you enjoy my stamp. Thanks. ^^

I love this stamp! I have mild cerebral palsy that affects both legs and a little in my right leg! At birth they thought I would be mentally unstable but here I am 25 years old a college graduate, and a life long ambition to be a writer!
So to anyone out there with CP who is afraid to follow your deams don't be! Don't let anyone keep you from sucess and understand that you are worthy to yourself and others!
This stamp is awesome definantly favoriting this!

I'm sorry to hear you got made fun of for how you walked. Those people either didn't know, or were just ignorant anyway.
You shouldn't have to feel ashamed for the way you are. We are all normal in our own way.

I do have CP mild one, but sometimes peoples almost jerk of when I say that I have it, o try to be all sorry. And people with CP don't want for other people to feel sorry for them, cause they want to do everything normal people do. I can do almost ever single thing everyone else can, but I know lots of people with CP that can', but thay are searchin for ways to express them self, and does that sometimes better than healthy people.
It was nice of you to make this stamp

I was five at the time so it was really hurful but I realize her ignorance as I've gotten older and I think it's funny! I swear some people :faceplam:

Your right about not many people knowing about it, i hadn't even heard of it until i first met you. I think that it should definately be something that needs to be made more aware of. From listening to what you wrote and from the comments of the peoplr below I wish everyone well and wish you well in raising awareness. I dunno how to add this stamp on my page (i heard only premium users can), but if i could, i would.
I hope others with Cerebal Palsy will see your example and feel encouraged and more confident in themselves

Yes, indeed it is sad that it's not that well known. But hopefully awareness can be raised about this condition.
I am left stunned at how many people think that CP automatically means the person is slow. When CP affects the part of the brain that controls movement. *facepalm*
It's those kind of things that upset me about this. But thankfully there are people like you and others that don't automatically assume that.
I thank you for the well wishes and encouragement, too.
Wow, those last words made me tear up a bit. I thank you for them. <3 I sure hope to be able to do that.
[oh, and if you want to, you could always fav this stamp. That would help a little.
]
I'm thinking of doing another one of these soon with the colour green. I recently found out green symbolizes mental health awareness along with Cerebral Palsy and other things.
Yknow, those awareness ribbons they have. CP would be linked to the green ribbon.

Not every one with cp is lucky enough to do everything people without cp can. My cousin is 6 years old and will never sit up unasisted, feed herself, brush her own hair.. etc. Thats what makes the condition so sad.

I know. Sadly that is the truth with this condition. I'm sorry about your cousin and I wish you and her all the best.
My point in that was that others shouldn't think that people with CP (or any disability for that matter) are any less because of it. They shouldn't be looked down upon, they are still people.
That was my point in that statement.

Curious, what types do you have? Mine is Spastic (I think) Diplegia. My legs are mainly affected with my left hand being affected a little as well.
My balance is poor as well.
But anyway, I'm glad this stamp could be of use to you. Hopefully it'll get the word out about CP more. I am amazed at how little people know about this condition.

I have a friend with this condition. (He's severely autistic as well.)
He is wheelchair bound, but what really gets me is his bubbly persona. He's 21, but behaves like he's a lot younger.
He loves to piss people off just to watch them get mad, he loves to disobey, and he loves to be yelled at (he falls apart laughing if you to that to him).
He also loves to get out of his wheelchair and crawl around on the grass.

Aww really? I'm sorry to hear he's autistic and also has this condition, but I'm glad he has a happy personality.
It's really easy to let a disability depress you, but I'm glad he's happy go lucky despite it.
I thank you for faving this stamp. Hopefully the word will get out more about this condition.
And maybe people will start to be educated more on the matter. Thanks.

My mom has CP. It's affected her right leg the most. As a child she had to wear braces and casts all the time and has (over the years) gone through about 15 surgeries. Her most recent ones she had to have a metal plate put in her leg and then it had to be removed. She drags her foot and it's all scarred up from her surgeries but she is extremely active.

Wow, really? I had no idea.
Yeh, it was the same with me (with the casts and everything. )
So far, I've only had one surgery (on my knee) but I'll have to have at least three more in the future.
(on my other knee and both hips. )
But yes, I'm really glad that your mom is still active. It's good to stay active that way everything is exercised well and doesn't get stiff.
Tell her to keep at it.
Oh, and thanks so much for the fav on my stamp. It's really very much appreciated.
