Description

Every time I see a dimetrodon I think I need to do some kind of artwork based on one. This time it was actually inspired by my recent hunt for the Jurassic World figure of its vegetarian cousin, Edaphosaurus. The figure actually looks more like a dimetrodon with a swooped back fin but I still like it. Its head looks larger and more carnivorous than it probably was.

Anyway, I finally decided to make our fin backed synapsid buddy in Zbrush as an anthro Dimetrodon. I made the scales and osteoderms mainly like a crocodilian's, the color scheme, aside from the fin, is inspired by the Black Spiny Tailed Iguana, and the patterning on the fin is inspired by the patterns I saw on a grouper fish's fin I saw when I went to the Newport Aquarium recently. (although I made it a bit more vibrant than the grouper.)

I tried some new techniques with this, with every Zbrush project I try to incorporate some new things I've learned, and as anyone learning Zbrush knows, there are so many tools, tricks and techniques to learn. This time I did a technique where I drew the fin in illustrator, imported it and then extruded it as a 3d shape and then sculpted on it. Also made a VDM brush to make the osteoderms.

As with my other Zbrush sculpts I'll be uploading additional views of this over the next couple days.
