I think this design has been used in several of those Sci-fi classics, with and without wings.

Looks like the rocket ship from the classic Rocky Jones space adventures - they used to heckle them on Mystery Science Theater 3000 Of course I think the model of Jone's ship was reused often for other movies.

'Destination Moon' (1950) actually predates 'Rocky Jones' (1954)
The model of the Luna was made specifically for that film.
I've never see it used in any other movie unlike many other models.
Just FYI.

This model just arrived today, I will be building it soon and your artwork will be a great help, especially as the kit arrived with no assembly or painting instructions.

Yes it is, model 9110. Much smaller, at about six inches, than I had hoped but being a child of that era these things, like the Johnny Quest Dragonfly and and U.S. Moonship that arrived today bring back serious good memories. Besides, at sixty-two and retired, I have way too much free time. Maybe I should build one full scale in the back yard and scare all these gang bangers in the neighborhood silly.

Hate to do this to you, but were you aware that they also did a larger kit?
Kit #9110 (what you have) is in 1/350 scale.
Kit# 9111 is in 1/144 scale, more than twice the size.
Wish they did the Cosmostrator in 1/144 scale... I really like that design too...

I am aware of the differences in scale, but I am limited to the space I can afford to give to models. This is only a 10x11 foot room and it holds my computer, three book shelves along with my model building table. As to the Cosmostrator, that was a LOUSY movie. Thank you for the note however.

OK.
We'll have to disagree on the movie 'The Silent Star' though.

Of course, we all have our likes and dislikes, rarely are two people in-sync with everything. Now back to the scratch-built inter-planetary ship I'm working on. First start with a two foot length of 1" PVC pipe...

Thats the one based on the Heinlein book isn't it?
Great looking model good to see the landing stabilizer is the cherry red that metals got painted alot in that period.
That long ladder on the outside of the ship always bugged me, if Barnes could design all the rest of the ships systems in the time period alloted then why couldn't he at least have done a platform lift (Carrying the telecope for instance down a ladder that length? no way).

Thanks David.
Yes, Destination Moon was based on "Rocketship Galileo" by Robert A.Heinlein.
I agree. I wouldn't want to deal with that climb. I wonder if there was some sort of crane for moving equipment in that upper compartment with the hatch above the view-port. The schematics that I found simply lists that area as "Support" or "Equipment".
