“We’re lost.” Avin huffed.

“We’ve been lost since we left.” Crucible growled.

“I see the little ‘star child’ didn’t get the praise for her attitude.” Avin rolled his eyes, mostly to himself.

Crucible whipped around, “Well, if you had more of a use than being a complaining sack of Torus shit, then maybe, just maybe, we would’ve found something by now!”

“And maybe if you weren’t a powder keg of aggression, I wouldn’t complain! It’s like every time I try to make conversation, you bite my head off!” Avin turned his head up and to the side to avert his gaze from Crucible.

Crucible flicked her tail in irritation, bared her teeth, and approached Avin. Taking notice, Avin faced Crucible and began to back up in fear, but keeping his stern gaze.

“You have been a dead weight,” Crucible hissed, “I’ve been feeding you, finding shelter, providing water, defending us, and lighting the way through this dense fog. You have done NOTHING to pull your weight!” Crucible’s roared, flecks of flame peeking out of her throat, “It’s bad enough that you’re a useless coward, now you’re a parasitic Joltik! So how about you shut your barking trap or do something useful for once!”

Avin lowered his head, “Oh yes, cause you would’ve been fine if you were left in that pile of rubble,” he growled, “I was the one who dug us out, if your peabrain remembers! And when we do find civilization, you think they’ll be welcome to a bad-tempered, combative, little bi-”

“Are you guys alright?”

The two stopped their bickering to see a newcomer had joined their conversation. The individual was tall, sprouting two frill-like ears, and a long tail adorned with a small spike. They were clutching a stick in both their clawed paws.

“I think we should leave these two squabbling Pidoves to their business.”

Another emerged from the mist, this one a scowling, green cat-like Pokemon.

“W-We should lead them to Castanet first!”

From behind the others, bounced a small purple ball with long blue tendrils that sprouted from their head.

Avin and Crucible slowly glanced at each other with dumbfounded looks. They then slowly went back to examining the new pokemon.

“You think they are feral?” The green cat said.

“None-sense! They’re just surprised to see three amazing Guild Leaders before them!” The frill-eared Pokemon gave a hearty laugh.

“Ahem!” Avin cleared his throat and fixed his face. He approached the three, “I apologize, we’ve just been lost for a long while, tensions were getting high. So, may I ask, where are we?”

“You’re on the outskirts of Castanet!” The very bubbly frilled one spread their arms wide to emphasize the statement, throwing the stick they were clutching to the side. Their arms lowered and placed a paw on their chest, “I’m Madaline, Guild Leader of the Explorer’s Guild!”

“I am Weston,” The cat said looking to where the stick landed, “I am the leader of the Arcanist’s Guild.”

There was a pause as everyone looked at the purple one.

“O-Oh!” They snapped to attention, “I’m sorry. I’m Ursala! I’m the leader of the Aristocrats Guild!”

“Well, you all sound very esteemed!” Avin said, “But my friend and I,” He gestured to Crucible, who responded with a snort. Avin shot her a look and regained his composure to address the Guild Leaders, “We’re not from around here and we’re not entirely sure what the Guilds themselves are. Perhaps you can give us more information? I apologize in advance, as well. We may be asking you to repeat information. See, we’re quite exhausted.”

“Most likely from arguing,” Weston grumbled.

“Well of course you’re exhausted!” Madlaine said, slightly nudging Weston. “We can head back to Castanet so you can get some proper rest!”

Madaline skipped off, followed by Wetson and Avin who took up the front, guiding the way forward and continuing the conversation. Ursula watched and looked back at Crucible with an expectant smile. Crucible dug her claws into the ground, but when their guides were barely visible, she decided to move, taking clumps of dirt with her. Ursula smiled sweetly at Crucible. She didn’t notice and let out a low, disgruntled, growl, causing Ursula to jump and run head. Crucible was surprised by the response. She frowned and hung her head.

During the walk to town, the Guild Leaders explained to Avin the roles and purpose of each Guild. Crucible snapped questions from behind every so often, but after a few nervous responses and a harsh look from Avin, she stopped. During conversation, Avins’s voice was swept away as the mist cleared to reveal large tropical trees, the likes of which neither had ever seen before. The foliage had vibrant greens with colourful flowers sprinkled on their tops. Tall trees topped with like-type leaves stretched up on all sides of them. What really threw the both of them off was the sounds of distant roars. They traveled through the trees, determined to find the source of the bellows. The trees parted, the fresh scent of salt and brine graced their noses, and they found themselves staring out at a large body of water. The bright, deep, hue of the water was almost alien to the both of them and to see it crashing onto the shore, it was beautiful. Below was a large group of buildings, tall and strong, decorated with the moving bodies of pokemon from all walks of life. A strong wind came from behind them, threatening to drag them all the way to the town below.

“Yep! This is our  beautiful city! Welcome!” Madaline beamed.

The two never saw anything like it. The only things they’d known were the snow-capped mountains of their home. To see this amount of colorful greenery, diversity of architecture, large body of water, and harmony of all kinds of Pokemon, it was like an impossible dream.

Avin looked over to see Crucible staring out with her jaw agape. He smirked, “Strange to see your mouth open without the fire.”

Crucible clapped her mouth shut and sneered at Avin. He just laughed.

“So what Guild do you think you’re going to join? The Explorer’s right? It’s totally the Explorer’s Guild.”

“Madaline! Contain yourself, let these fresh strangers decide for themselves.” Weston scolded.

“Avin seemed interested in the Aristocrats Guild, I think,” Ursula chimed in.

“I thank you all so much for making us feel welcome. I think it’s best that my friend and I discuss further.” Avin gave a curt little bow.

Weston huffed and was the first to leave, followed by Ursula.

“I’ll be waiting” Madaline winked and skipped after the other two.

“I’m not joining the Aristocrats.” Crucible quickly blurted out.

“Now don’t dismiss the thought before it’s even entered your mind. I think it’d be fun! After all, traveling, talking with Pokemon far and wide, making money. After all, us Frosts specialize in business.” Avin pulled a very proud stance.

“I’d probably scare every Pokemon away.” Crucible averted her eyes.

“Hm, you have a point. Not a very ‘Business-esk’ personality,” Avin smirked,” Or I could keep you as an attraction! I’m sure Pokemon would pay to go toe-to-claw with you.”

Crucible snapped her head towards Avin and growled, “Or I can rip off your tail and sell it as a fancy scarf.” Avin’s ears twisted back and he looked away.

Crucible huffed loudly, letting out some smoke, “And who are you to decide? I’m the one that got us here. I should pick. I say the Explorer’s Guild.”She sat down and crossed her arms, “Fighting through dungeons and saving others seems more my speed.”

Avin pulled a disgusted look. Then he got an idea, he pulled the most sincere face he could, “I know you’re the strongest around,” He tried not to laugh at the statement, “But it’s more likely you’ll be dealing with Pokemon in rescue missions. Do you think they are going to be impressed by your fighting ability? I’m thinking they’ll be more scared.” He tried to pull an empathetic look, “You’d be able to defend caravans with ease and be so renowned in the Aristocrat Guild. I’m sure the majority in that Guild are weaklings, like myself, you’d be a diamond in the rough.”

“I think you’re lying through your teeth. There is nothing wrong with how I fight... I bet that there are strong merchants just as much as brittle ones. And if they needed the muscle, they’d turn to mercenaries or the Explorer's Guild. So don’t bullshit me, Ice Queen.”

“These are all theories of yours, they don’t hold much weight to them. So there is no certainty that you’re right. However, I was speaking with Ursula about it and-”

“I heard you talking with all of them, don’t even start. Not to mention if my points are theories, then so are yours. “Crucible wrapped her tail around herself and stared out at the large water, “What is that by the way?”

“Are you serious?” Avin scoffed, “That’s the ocean you dolt.”

“I don’t need you to remind me I didn’t get out much!” Crucible barked.

“Neither of us did…” Avin averted his eyes to look out onto the sea.

There was a shared silence.

“Perhaps it would be best to join the Explorer’s Guild, get out into the world. Besides, everyone loves the hero-types.” Avin smirked to himself after mentioning “hero”, “Besides, there needs to be a friendly face to help in the rescue missions.”

Crucible was silent. She moved her tail around her, flattening the grass as she thought. She eventually sighed heavily and got up, “Come on.”

“Excuse me?”

“We’re going to the Explorer’s Guild.” Crucible turned and traveled along the path down towards the town.

Avin quickly got up and chased after her. The two walked side-by-side, ready to take on the new challenge of their lives. They had doubts about working with one another, but for now they’ll see what will happen.

“We’re definitely not joining the Arcanist's Guild.”

“Oh definitely not, you’d kill us before we even started.” Avin laughed.
