After several days of walking, Link and company saw a castle rise in the morning horizon. "We should arrive at sunset" said Marco, judging the distance. Shadow finally awoke, but he felt uneasy around all the strangers. He remembered saving Mario and his friends, then he passed. He noticed his wounds had been treated, and only felt a little pain in his left arm. Goombella told him how they were being hunted by a black and red robot, and that after encountering with the knights, they all defeated the robot. "I wouldn't be so sure about that. Dr. Eggman built him as the ultimate weapon to destroy Sonic, but then changed his mission to guard me when I was in cryogenic sleep. Then we became friends when I awoke. We fought equally back then, but he was upgraded and reprogrammed by Eggman. Not even I can defeat him alone now."

They continued to walk until they reached the castle gardens by sunset, just like Marco said. When the soldiers guarding the entrance saw Marco they asked "Are they with you, Master Marco?" Marco nodded and they all entered the castle. Inside, they found the king, along with several guards and a group of anthropomorphic animals. Shadow widened his eyes when he saw his lost group and was about to reunite when two guards blocked his path. "He looks like the rest. Let him pass." the king told. He proceeded to where Sonic was.

"Shadow?! Ha ha ha! Were've you been? We were all worried that you might get eaten!" joked Sonic, giving Shadow a palm in the shoulder. "Back off, Sonic" warned Shadow. "Sheesh. Always a pleasure talking to you, buddy…". Shadow glared at Sonic, furious, then at Tails "I will need your help, Tails…" Tails got a little nervous "…Omega has been reprogrammed, and seriously upgraded.".

Marco kneeled before the king "Your Majesty, I have brought visitors of anther world. They wish to ask for your help on their mission." "Hmm. More outsiders?" replied the king. "What do you mean more?" "Those furry friends came from another world" he pointed the Sonic's group. He then looked at Blumiere "Blumiere, have you met my most reliable knight, Marco?" Blumiere and Marco exchanged a bow and a handshake.

Timpani looked at Mario and Luigi and almost scared everyone when she yelled "Mario? Luigi? What are you doing here?" Mario and Luigi looked kind of puzzled. Timpani came closer and hugged both brothers "It's me, Timpani! Or Tippi if you remember" Mario and Luigi widened their eyes and returned the hug "Tippi, I mean Timpani, I can't believe it! I thought you and Count Bleck died when the void disappeared!" "We were transported to another dimension. But how come you are here?" "We entered a pipe in a monster-filled dungeon and ended up here." They continued to talk after Blumiere joined them.

The king raised his voice and said "Well, it looks like we have visitors from other worlds! I want to welcome every one of you to dinner at the castle. I want to know more about your worlds and how you came here."

That night, everyone was sitting around a big table, and on it were a lot of dished filled with succulent food. King Cervantes said 'Enjoy the food!' and everyone began eating. Sonic seemed a little disappointed when he saw no chili-dogs on the table, but still enjoyed the food. During dinner, the king explained that his kingdom was inhabited by a vast diversity of people. Humans and anthropomorphic animals were dominating, but Fairies, Gorons, Goombas, and Toads were common, too. Everyone noticed that King Cervantes was very proud of his kingdom, because the way expressed how extended biodiversity was in Halla always caused him to smile. When Link asked about Zoras, Cervantes told him that he didn't know what they were.

By the end of dinner, King Cervantes knew more or less the reason of each one to be in his kingdom, but felt uneasy about all of them appearing at the same time. Sonic and his friends were there to stop Dr. Eggman; Mario and company were there to investigate about Goombella's mysterious book; and the Hyruleans were there to protect the kingdom from an unknown evil. Knuckles talked about the cloaked guy that abducted Eggman and effortlessly defeated Sonic and himself. Shadow warned about the upgraded Omega. Blumiere talked about the Tribe of Darkness, and this seemed to have caught Chad's attention, so did Goombella's 'Hyrule Bestiary' book.

"Ok. Everybody knows everybody! That's good, considering that there is a legend that says three legendary heroes will come to save this kingdom from total destruction. I'm not really worried, since there are more than ten of you, but it is not unwise to keep it in mind." began the king, who was interrupted by Link "Sorry to sound harsh, your majesty, but if experience has taught me something is that every legend comes from true events.". The king stared at Link for a while before continuing "True, my boy, but that is why I will send all of you to test you. There have been rumors spreading in Droplet City that say there is a monster terrorizing the nearby lake, Lake Crystal. I want all to go there and investigate. If there is such a monster, destroy it. If you succeed in this task, I will offer my support to all of your missions. Got it?" "No problem! We have Mario to count on!" said Goombella "By the way, your highness, I noticed you wear a black crown. Is it not normal to wear a golden crown?" The king laughed at the question "It is so at the rest of the kingdoms, were bloodline weights more than worth. The ruler's successor is not his or her offspring, but the one that has defeated the previous ruler in combat and also called worthy of wearing a crown by the people. That is why there has been no coup d'états in my kingdom for hundreds of years! The black color represents the hardships one must overcome to become king." he finished, proud of his crown.

The most eager to go were Mario, Sonic, and Link. When Stuffwell came out of Mario's pocket, he asked "Are you ready for this trial? Make sure all preparifications are made!" "Yup! All done. You have the power-ups we haven't used?" "Affirmative". The talking suitcase caught Link's and Chad's attention. "How can you have a suitcase that talks?..." asked Link, curious "…some sort of magic?". Mario laughed "No, Professor E. Gadd invented him. He can do all kinds of things, but mostly gives advices and store stuff." "Right…" "LISTEN EVERYONE, WE ARE LEAVING IMMEDIATELY!" Marco yelled before turning around and started walking toward Droplet City, and everyone else followed him.

After half a day of walking, they reached Droplet City, and the first thing they did was go to a local restaurant to eat lunch. Despite the name, the city was more like a town. It wasn't big, and looked mostly touristic. Inside the restaurant, after they all ate, Marco explained the trial that must be overcome so they are recognized as worthy of receiving help. There had been reports of people disappearing while visiting the lake. They had to investigate what was happening.

Once done with their meals, Marco led the group to Lake Crystal. A large lake with clean, crystal-clear water was before their sights. Everything looked deserted, except for a small house with what seemed a warehouse nearby. Mario and Link decided to go investigate. When they were like ten feet from the house, an explosion was heard from the warehouse, and smoke began to come from it.
