Description
Cryptid File 060C - RopenLocation: Papua, New Guinea
Evidence: Sightings, Footage of bioluminecent creatures, native folklore
My thoughts and theories: You already know my stance on creationists in Cryptozoology [link]
So I won't focus on that this time. Instead I'll focus on the creature at hand. I'll admit, I never really did put mutch stock into the Ropen. Kongamato yes, but Ropen no. I'm a bit more convinced now what with seeing footage of odd glowing flying creatures in the small country, which was one of the reasons I never put too much faith in it. That and creationist hop all over it, thats what steered me away the most. The most well known theory of what the Ropen truly is, is that it is a surving pterosaur. In the creationist view it is unchanged and thus god must be real. Re- tarded. I'm sorry, I'll focus on the Ropen as I should. Anyway, the Ropen is said to produce a bioluminecent glow while it flies at night. If true, then why? Is it a sexual display? A way to attract flying prey? Just being groovy? Whatever the reason, Monsterquest captured unknown flying creatures over New Guinea, glowing for all the world to see. Now, the other theories regarding the Ropen are that it is a large bat or possibly a nocturnal bird. The wings of some birds do look like pterosaurs so its not too far fetched. But not the leathery quality that the species is said to exhibit. The giant bat theory does sound very neat, for a glowing bat would be able to easily attract prey. The creature is also known to to have a large beak with sharp teeth. Unbird like, but like some pterosaurs. The cryptid is also known to have a long tail that trails behind it in it's nocturnal flights. The Ropen is also known as the Du'ah and has been said to dig up graves. It is also said to have a 23 foot wingspan, similar to a Pteranodon. Odd, considering that some people believe that it is a hybrid of a Pteranodon and Ramphorynchus, thes two species lived MILLIONS of years apart so the creationist go down yet another point. This seems like it would have to be an evolved pterosaur to exhibit all of these traits. For a pterosaur would need stronger arms than those in the fossil record to dig for long enough periods of time in order to get the the fresh corpse. The creature is also said to feast mainly on fish, so maybe it's lights are used to bring fish and squid to the surface at night? I need more non-biased expiditions to be conducted before I can really say much more on the Ropen.
File End.

Has anyone ever brought up the hypothesis that the Ropen (and possibly, other "living" pterosaurs) are actually surviving lineages of ancient bat?

Ya, I'm sure they have. Some people say the Ropen could be a bat due to the fact bats can have wierd shaped faces. So a vaguely pterosaur like face would not be totally out of the question.

Probably makes more sense, too. There's no evidence that even the ramphyrynchoid (long-tailed) pterosaurs survived past the Middle Cretaceous, much less species of pterosaur.

Theres also another theory someone stated here. Its that a reptile could of re-evolved pterosaur like features. Which is not out of the question either. Both seem just as valid.

That might be stretching it a bit, unless this creature can't use flapping flight.

Some people say it has crocodile like mouth, some say it has a beak, others claim that it's furry only to be opposed by other faction who claims they are scaly. Personally I think it's bunch of dingo's kidneys!

Monster design would work with a kaiju. With that said, I could see it being more of a form of undiscovered species of reptile more than a surviving pterosaur. Or a long faced bat with a tail.

Thanks! And bats can have wierd faces so its not so much of a stretch to think of one looking like a pterosaur.

Sounds to me like a lizard that convergently evolved with pterasaurs. (kinda like some lost spec pages). Or something similar that evolved to be a opprotunist of the air.
I personally think the ancient pterasaurs would be out-competed by modern flyers in the air and any flightless ones would have lost to most land animal (plus that one doesn't even help this legend)

If anything that sounds very plausible. Not like its imposible. What species of lizard could of it evolved from though? Would it be like a "Flying Dragon Lizard" or from somethig we haven't seen yet?
I forgot to mention in there that its supposedely has a crest too.

Either something like a monitor (those guys have enough funky evolutions in the past) or an undiscovered kind.
Some lizards have crests.

Well it does help the "evolved from lizards" theory.

Only reason I asked is because I don't know of any pterosaur cryptids in South America.

guess what! I was looking at the other videos on that link and I found a hellhound one. The drawing I made is based off a hellhound. The head and front "paws" (fingers in mine) are not doglike, but the rest is totally doglike. When I get it scanned I will let you say if it counts or not.

I'm sure it does (as long as its not TOO fantasy like, like a mane of fire, extra body parts, stuff like that), just submit it via the naimg rules and it should be fine. You can also look at the submissions for inspiration and see how they did their's.

I've never read much about the Ropen, so I can't really say I agree or disagree. I always strayed away from it because I couldn't find any information out side of hopelessly biased creationism websites and sensationalist "OMG dinosaurs are alive!!!" fantards. Maybe there's something to it, but I haven't heard enough to know. Regardless, nice drawing!

I was pretty much the same way for the longest time. I was always like "Kongamato good, Ropen bad". But MQ detailed a sighting by a US soldier (despite the CGI model they used for the Ropen was a Pteranodon with teeth, hows that for irony? And the CGI Pterosaur had only a small tail instead of a long one ) that sounded true. And even though the episode went with an idiot form "Genesis Park" ech, it wasn't all dissapointment what with the footage and all.
And thanks! I tried to make sure theres not so much white space.

Sci-Fi channel did an episode of 'Destination Truth' on the ropen, in which they capture lights and find Human bones in a supposed 'ropen nest'.

yes the Destination Truth was the footage shown early in the episode of MonsterQuest, it was a expidition a few years ago right? I've looked through some of the data(they did show the data I say on tv so I was thinking, hey I know this already) it is some really nice footage.

Also if you didnt cathc this one, they did an episode with the 'Yowie' and actually had stones thrown at them and caught two large humaniod figures with their heat sensing equipment, and heard vocalizations similiar to that of those heard in North american Bigfoot cases.
