She reached delicately behind her head and undid the clasps of the necklaces at the nape of her neck. The locket glistened, the key beside it swung like a pendulum. She laid them down on the night stand draped with scarlet cloth. The chains fell in loops and patterns, and she thought again of the one who had given these tokens to her. She kept his soul in the locket, to preserve him forever though his existence was no more. She kept him, close to her heart, under lock and key.
