Description
The Giant Sicilian-Maltan pelican is one of the largest fish-eating birds of the Pleistocene, but, however, sometimes is difficult for this bird satisfy its hunger only with fishes. Only at times of greater scarcity, they roam around the island, looking to eat small vertebrates, like other birds and even mammals. This time, this great pelican chose a peculiar prey, an elephant....
A young Pygmy Elephant (Palaeoloxodon falconeri) has been caught in the jaws of the huge feathered, it is trying to escape, kicking the bag, but it is in vain.
Its frightened partner tries to attack the huge piscivorous, but this will escape.
The fate of these two is uncertain, one could get out alive, or both will died too.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A strange idea inspired by all those images of pelicans being predatory monsters.

Couldn't the elephant try to spear the pelican through the chest?

Yeah it could, must say that the scene is just a frame from a moment that can have any end so anything can happen.

Fair enough.
I like seeing these fictional prehistoric species from you - here's hoping for more of them in the future!

But, WOuldent the weight be enough to basicly pull the pelicans head to the floor and rip it's mouth open?

Probably, but the funny of the imagen is how this pelican is trying to eat it, also this is a bigger pelican (more that actual ones) with a more strong neck and mouth muscles, besides that it has caught a young.

Wow.. So both of them are real?: At first i thought it's a fantasy scene, some play on the myth of giant bird Roc which was said to hunt elephants.

Only the elephant is real, the other is fictional.
Also interesting point of view, I had not thought of that way as "fantasy scene"

a little crazy, especially considering that the skin pelican pouch is very thin which would make it very susceptible to tearing by the action of the hooves and colmilllos of dwarf elephants

She could, but the pelican will attempt to avoid her, maybe the bastard bird could make short flights to get away quickly.
Sad for the mother
p.d. : is the father, not the mother.

How could the bird support the weight of the baby, though? It's certainly heavier than the maximum load a flying animal could carry.

I must say, I just wanted to experiment with it, it is likely that this never could have happened by the weight problem.
On the other hand, this fictional species of pelican has been accustomed to hunt very large fishes, so that the elephant wouldn't be a problem.
