Description
One day, the musher takes Steele and Sarge with him to town to have Sarge fitted for a harness to begin his real work as a sled dog. Times have been tough for the pup and even though he is older, he wasted no second, when he saw his mother, to go to her to bury his face into her chest. He cried, and although she was surprised to see him at all, she attempted to soothe him and tried to understand what was wrong with him.

"It's hard, Momma..." he wavers, pressing his face further into her fur. She hushed him by dragging her tongue across the back of his head.

"I know, darling..." she whispers, her eyes darting from her son's back to Steele nearby the musher. He is looking at the two with some kind of annoyance, as if he was disgusted to see the scene. She glares, knowing all too well that her son most likely survived his first weeks on his own. Tears threatened to escape her as she already understood the fact that she couldn't do a thing about the situation her son was in. Steele was too stubborn, too full of himself to care about others.

She then turned her attention to Sarge again. She heard him sniffling, his tail wedged between his legs as he quivered in sheer bliss as he took in the scent of his mother. It had been so long since they'd seen each other.

"I wanna come home, Momma..." the pup's voice was desperate, and the pitiful canine-like whine that followed broke Anita's heart. She felt torn... take her son away from his owner, the musher, and Steele, or break it to the pup that she could do no such thing with the power she had. Her heart shattered.

"Sarge..." she breathed, pulling herself away from her son to see his face. He went to bury his nose back into her chest, but she lowered her head and he pressed his forehead against hers. "I... You... Can't come home... You have... a new... home..."

Tears spilled from the youngster's eyes. He whined, desperately, his ears falling. "Momma..."

"Please understand..." she hurried, "I want you to be home with me more than you'll ever know... but... You have a musher who must keep you... he needs you..."

"It hurts..." he looked down, his chin pressed against his own chest as he swallowed with great difficulty, his throat tightening painfully. She understood he was talking about his heart.

"I know, baby..." she soothed. She then approached him again, and she softly brushed her tongue against his forehead repeatedly. "But it will get better. I promise... Please be strong for Momma... Okay? We'll see each other again..."

"B-But Momm-!"

"Sarge!"

The two looked to the musher at the building where a craftsman worked. He was patting his leg, staring at Sarge, waiting for him to come to his calling. Sarge swiveled his head back to Anita, and she could see a darkness, a swirling, cloudy dark emotion within those usually bright and happy blue orbs. She clenched her eyes shut, and with one last bump of her nose to his cheek, she spoke again.

"Go... He needs you..."

He wanted to object, to beg, to avoid going back to the human. But... he could see how utterly powerless she was. He sniffed, swallowing down his emotions, nodding shakily.

"Yes, Momma... I love you..."

She smiled as sweetly as she could without appearing devastated. Her heart was already torn, and as she watched her son walk pitifully away, to rejoin with his human, she sobbed softly, her ears falling as she dipped her head in sorrow.

"I love you, too, baby..." she murmured before she turned away to rejoin with her own humans down the road.

This is one of the last moments of sweetness between the two, if not the last. After this is when Sarge starts to become cold, revealing a relation to his father by expressing rude behavior in reply to the harshness of his new life and those around him. He is about several months old here.
