Description Anita smiled when she spotted Sarge; he had just won his second sled race, and he was following his father Steele. She felt so proud of her son, and she hurried to go congratulate him. She approached him, after being passed by Steele, and she touched his cheek with her nose.

"Sarge, great job out there!" She exclaimed. "I'm so happy for you!"

His expression didn't even match half of her joy. He offered a small smile, barely even a hint of happiness in it. It was rather sad, and this alerted her. She tilted her head. "Sarge?"

He was silent for a few minutes, but finally he shifted his gaze to look up at her. She watched his eyes, and once they flickered to Steele, who was still waltzing away behind her. Then, he lowered his head and he brushed past her, his eyes having lost that innocent, loving shine that they had once contained when he had been younger. Anita breathed, and she watched him walk away, having not spoken a word to her, almost never acknowledging that she had been there. Her heart broke, and she sniffed, a tear beginning to sting her eyes.

"I'm lost him..." she sighed hopelessly.

......................

Before this scene, Steele had chewed Sarge out for causing the team to run slow during a practice race. He had not been racing long, had just won their first race of the season some weeks before. But because of his obsession with wanting to return home, he had been distracted and over the past days he had not focused on racing or building himself up. Despite he fact that Steele's team was way ahead of any of the other teams in the race, Steele felt that whatever had happened to cause them to be even slower today, had to involve his son.

So, Sarge decided to let go of the idea of ever returning home with his mother. He underwent a depression that caused him to speak little to anyone, and strangely he was running more progressively with the team, and during the rest of that season, Steele never said another word of bitterness towards him about his racing quality. He didn't talk to his mother, and Anita began to feel like his son had become a stranger.

But she still loves him dearly, and she desperately hopes that he will one day come around to his normal self.

Art and characters by me.
