The snow-leopardess was ruttled awake by giggles all around her. Those little giggles and Udi's soft hushing. She recognized each of the small chuckles. Jarred, Lark, Lotus, Azzie and even Udi. They all sounded like they were having fun while trying not to wake her up. She had a real good sleep after that terrible headache the day before, and she wanted to join the game around her. Sia pulled a small smile onto her maw before she opened her eyes. The same moment, the smile immediately disappeared. Nothing had changed. It was still dark. But she could hear her cubs and Udi? She could hear the birds, and even distant talking. She could feel the cubs wiggle around her, brushing against her pelt. Was this just another nightmare. Were they coming back? No it felt too real. Sia blinked multiple times while keeping her head low. Everything was still completely dark. Perhaps it really just was a nightmare. But still, she couldn't stop her paws from starting to tremble. "Udi. Could you pinch me please." Sia mumbled, her tone all to serious to be taken as a joke or a reference to their current life. No, she needed to know. If this was just a new nightmare that she would soon wake up from in his embrace, in the middle of the night- or if, her sight was gone. Inside though, she already knew the answer. It was and felt too real. At the same time, she might be just overreacting. Why would she loose her sight all of the sudden. That didn't make any sense. Perhaps they have blindfolded her somehow- no this must be a dream. The only explanation that made sense for this was that her mind was playing games with her. But it was not fun and she just wanted to wake up and join that game her cubs and mate were playing around her with such enthusiasm but still as silent as they could.
Udi was confused as he turned to his mate to see her look... Scared, startled, confused, a mix of emotions that he didn't expect her to have this time of day. He tilted his head, sensing her tone of voice was serious he turned to Agata and asked his eldest son to take the young one's out to play, the other male gave him a look but did as he was told. Then Udi turned back to Sia, nuzzling her neck gently, "Its not a dream my dear, we really are parents of three beautiful children." He purred, hoping that perhaps she had just woken up from a nightmare, and was maybe a little confused.
Sia's ears flicked when Udi asked Agata to take the cubs outside and she listened as they left with little hurried steps and small giggles, perhaps trying to climb onto Agata's back like they use to. If she could just see them. When the sound of steps got more quiet and quiet and then died, Udi nuzzled her neck, sending a cold shiver down her back as Sia lifted her head. It was not a nightmare. She truly couldn't see. All that she could sense was where the light was coming from, it seemed brighter there. Her ears folded back while glancing at Udi. Sia tried to orient where he was, based on where she hear his breathing from and even felt it on her fur, but she didn't know here exactly to look. It can't be. The snow-leopardess shook her head slighty while blinking. But it didn't help at all. "Udi, I can't-" She mumbled, her voice barely over a whisper, "-see anything." A slight panic was present in her voice as she curled her tail around herself, trying to hide how terribly her paws were shaking by now.
Udi felt worry creeping up on him, Sia was acting strange, blinking a lot and not looking at him. It reminded him of Lotus, the little blind cub they had picked up. And that... Worried him, Lotus was blind, why was Sia acting like her? Sia wasn't blind. Right? Then her voice hit his ears and that worry turned into down right fear. Siting in the pit of his gut like a stack of cold frozen rocks taking all the air out of his lungs so it took him a moment or two of stunned silence to reply. "You... Can't see? You can't see me? Or anything?" He asked, his voice a controlled calm despite his fear on the inside.
At his questions she blinked multiple times again, just to try. "Anything-" She mumbled, "Everything is black. All I know is that light is coming from there" Sia pointed her paw towards the cave entrance slightly. That's all she could see. Black, grey and whiteish. Now she knew how Lotus saw the world. Her main worry was just how she could see her family. How she'd see her cubs grow up? See Udi? Her grandkids? The world? Not at all. And that scared her a lot. "I don't know what's going on Udi-" She whispered, her voice trembling.
"Maybe you got some kind of illness... I-I'm sure its only temporary, lets get you to the healer's den." He said, nudging her shoulder gently to let her know where he was, as he stood up slowly, "You can lean on me..." He said gently, trying to keep his voice calm. Despite the fear and worry that was creeping into the back of his mind, his heart beating quickly in fear.
"Alright" The snow-leopardess mumbled before raising to her paws, leaning as close to Udi as it was possible. The dark was rather terrifying. Sia kept her head lowered as she walked alongside Udi towards the healer den, hoping to meet Mercury there and not Seeley. But the caracal was busy with her own cubs most likely anyway. Someone should just help her, she couldn't even mind who.
Mercury was sitting quietly in the medicine den sorting the herbs he had collected on his last gathering patrol, and he was enjoying every minute of the peaceful quiet. Lately it had been one thing after another. His mentor pregnant, now his mentor with cubs. Very annoying, loud cubs. Mewling and crying all the time it seemed. So, he was unbelievably grateful that Seeley was out of the den with them and he had been given the quiet he needed. The red cheetah remained hunched over his work. Mumbling the odd few things to himself while he worked.
Udi at this point didn't care who it was, as long as they helped Sia. Even if it was Seeley, surly she wouldn't let her anger of Udi allow herself to forget her duty. The thought still pained him, to think his daughter held so much disdain for him and his mate. But he pushed those thoughts back, they weren't important in this moment. Sia was, so he guided her as well as he could ,warning her of rocks and step up places. All the while ignoring the fast beating of his fearful heart. They aproached the healers den, "S-Seeley? Mercury? Anyone in there?" He called, unable to keep the hint of a stutter and fear out of his voice, he swallowed and tried to sound more calm in his next words. "Sia needs help, its important, please."
Mercury was still working when he heard a voice calling from the den's opening. Udi? The cheetah looked up and turned his head towards the Entrance. Udi's voice. It stuttered and there was a mote of urgency in it. He barely needed to hear the rest as he jumped up, heading out of the den to meet Udi. Sia needs help? No wonder Udi sounded so urgent and fearful. He thought maybe she was out in the territory since it seemed Udi had stopped at the entrance but as they came into view he saw that Sia was with him. Looking rather terrified. He didn't see any blood, no obvious injuries. Something else? Internal maybe. The he noticed the way she leaned on him and how her eyes seemed wide but they weren't focused on anything. Blind? Strange. He assessed all this in only a few moments. Nodding to Udi and stepping aside. Gesturing with his tail to come inside. "Follow me." He was certain that Udi could show her the way. "Are you in any pain Sia?" He asked as he turned to walk back into the healers den. He would grab her some basic herbs first, just something to calm her and pain relief if she needed it. He walked past a few beds before nodding at one that would fit Sia. "Lay down there." He instructed. This all came rather naturally to him now.
Her ears flicked from Udi towards Mercury, back and forth as the two spoke. Sia stepped a
long with her mate as they followed Mercury deeper into the den, but the snow-leopardess only took timid steps. There were things she had never noticed before, such as how a little warmth radiated upwards from the ground, and how she could sense the vibration in her whiskers as Udi spoke. Or perhaps this just came with the blindness. Sia shook her head as she answered, "No, now I don't" She felt perfectly fine, she had even gotten a good sleep, it was just dark. After Udi guided her to the nest Mercury showed him, Sia settled down, tail curled around herself. Just where to look now? For a few moments Sia just stared where she thought Udi stood, but decided to not stress about it. She simply lowered her head to rest it on her paws, just staring ahead.
Udi was glad for Mercury's calm and confident voice. He needed Mercury in this moment more then ever, he tried his best to keep calm but his own fear was just under the surface. Feeling the calm confidence that radiated off the cheetah helped Udi control his own emotions too. Sia needs me to stay calm, he reminded himself as he gently showed Sia the way inside the cave. Keeping close enough for their sides to touch as he gently guided her with small nudges and touches, giving her a lick over the ears until they came to the place Mercury asked her to lay. Giving her a gently nudge in the direction of the bed, glancing at Mercury Udi gave him a grateful look that was also filled with worry.
Mercury saw the look Udi gave him and gave a slight smile in return, though it only lasted a few seconds before he was right back to serious. Once he saw Sia settled he padded back to the den's entrance. Flagging down a gladiator and giving them some instructions. When the gladiator hurried off Mercury returned to the inside of the healers den, then off in the direction of the herb store. "I'll be right back with something." Once he could gaze upon the shelves of herbs, the cheetah pulled out a small pot of herbs, and an empty bowl. He scooped a measured amount of herbs, using his eyes to adjust the amount he had scooped out to the proper amount. He placed the herbs into the bowl and then he carried the bowl with him back out to where Udi and Sia were. He set the bowl down beside him, when just on cue the gladiator returned. Mercury thanked him and took the steaming kettle of water from him. Pouring the water into the bowl with the herbs. Finally he looked up from his work, pushing the bowl to Sia. "Some tea. Made with various herbs. It'll help you relax Sia." They often used this particular blend of herbs to help cats relax while they treated them. Since she'd said she wasn't in pain he hadn't added any pain relievers. Softly he reached out and using his paws guided Sia's paws to the bowl so she could feel it and take some sips. "It might be a bit hot, so just be careful." It was time to get to business now. He looked to Udi then back to Sia. "Tell me what happened?"
Sia waited patienly, hearing Mercury's steps all around the Healer's den, her ears twitching. Soon something was placed infront of her, tea. "Thank you" The she-cat said when feeling paws guide her own to the bowl of tea. She certainly needed to relax. So Sia took the bowl and a few careful sips from the warm liquid. "Well, I had a terrible headache yesterday. And I woke up with my sight gone." Sia explained, clearing he throat. "I can see a little light, tell where it's coming from, but that's- all." She turned her head towards the entrance of the den, then back at Udi and Mercury.
Udi suddenly felt old sitting there, watching how mature Mercury was, how skilled he was, and how much older he looked. I remember when he was just a little cub in the woods... The thought was strange and he quickly pushed the strange feeling away. I'm not THAT old yet, he reassured himself. But he was impressed, Mercury was learning quickly, it was interesting to watch him work and Udi would have enjoyed watching it more if he wasn't so scared. Udi's eye's flicked to Sia as she mentioned her headache, I should have taken her right away...Maybe we could have done something... He leaned over and gave her comforting licks on the cheek. But remained silent, not sure what to say.
Mercury had a hard time masking his confusion. But he managed to keep his expression neutral. That kind of sudden blindness, he'd never heard of such a thing before. He'd heard of blindness cause by head injuries and such but never from just a headache. There was always some trauma to do with something so sudden. Gradual blindness could happen over time but never just over night. Had Seeley ever heard of something like this. He sat silently, thinking his options over and trying to decide the best course of action when something occured to him. However, it was something he'd never done or tried. He knew that there was some difficulties between Seeley, Udi and Sia but he had to offer. Make sure they knew what he was going to try was only a 'maybe' solution. So, he finally spoke up, his voice confident but with a note of caution. "I'll be honest and say this is something I've never heard of and certainly never tired to treat. I do have an idea but I do have to offer. Would you like me to find Seeley and have her consult? I have heard of oils and herbs that have been used to assist in the recovery of blindness caused from head injuries but I have no idea if it'll do anything to help you. I know what to make it with and we do have the ingredients but I am still an apprentice. Seeley might have a better idea of what to do than me."
Sia leaned against Udi as he ran his tongue along her cheeks. She didn't want him to blame himself for anything. No one saw this coming. That it was even possible? Sia's ears perked when Mercury spoke out again. The arguments with Seeley mattered little to her now. If she can help her in any way, she would not say no to that. The snow-leopardess nodded her head without a second thought, "That's fine. I don't mind." She said, slowly feeling less anxious as her heart beat calmer, probably from the tea she had gotten. A good mixture it was.
Udi nodded, "Anything that will help Mercury," he said, he knew Seeley would put her duty before her personal issues with her father... Or he hoped she would, because he really couldn't even think about arguing with her about anything. All his focus, fear, and worry was on Sia right now. "Please do all you can, you don't have to ask me for permission," He said he meant it as a joke but it fell flat as his voice was filled with a mix of sadness and controlled calamity.
He rested his head on Sia's shoulder, staying close to her to comfort her as much as he could.
Mercury picked up on such a mix of emotions from the two that he wasn't completely sure how to proceed. On the upside he could see the tension leaving Sia's muscles, which meant she was calming down. His eyes wandered to Udi, there was so much worry and fear in his body language that it put the cheetah on edge. He'd never seen Udi in such a state. Though it stood to reason that it was possible for everyone to get like that when someone they loved was in danger or pain. He nodded after a moment of observing the two. "Okay. I'll see if I can find her." He stood and took a few steps, before pausing. Mercury gently brushed Udi's shoulder with his tail. Awkwardly trying to show Udi some kind of comfort. Then he continued out of the den. The healers apprentice spent only a few minutes asking around before it became clear that Seeley wasn't in camp, an urgent matter in the territory had called her out. Seeing he had been busy himself she gone herself. Who knew how long she'd be out there. So, mercury returned to the healers den, thinking over what to do next. He paused again when he stood in front of Udi and Sia again. "It looks like Seeley has been called away for a bit. I'm not sure when she'll be back." He paused thoughtfully. "Thinking about the ingredients and such in the remedy I've heard of. There's nothing that will harm you in it if we gave it a go. The worst it could do is nothing." He looked to the mates before him. Wondering what he would do if he couldn't find a way to help them.
When Udi rested his head on her shoulder, Sia leaned her head against his neck, closing her eyes. She heard Mercury exit the den, leaving silence behind. And for the first time, silence put her on edge. It's not like there was anything going on around them, but she felt like she's missing whatever is going on. But it was not as terrible as the thought of not being able to see her cubs as they grow up, see Udi again, Jule and Sage, her friends- anything. She took a deep breath, tail twitching anxiously. But she had to remain hopeful. Perhaps- perhaps, this way only temporary. After some time her ears caught the sound of approaching steps, and she turned her head to listen to Mercury. "Alright" She mumbled, nodding her head. It was worth a try. If there was just a little chance even then it was worth. "Let's try it" Sia agreed to the treatment, getting a little more hopeful due to that fact that there was a treatment that perhaps will help.
Udi pressed his muzzle against his mates fluffy neck, licking her cheek before turning his blue gaze to his friend Mercury. "We have to try everything, lets do it." He agree'd with his mate, watching her closely, before looking back at the cheetah. "Thank you Mercury," he said genuinely, he would be forever grateful to the apprentice for doing all he could to help his mate.
Mercury nodded, his confidence returning as he walked past them and dug into the herb stores. Pulling out jars and bowls. Measuring herbs with his paws. Crushing them into the bowl to mix them together. Adding a small amount of water to the mix. Kneading it till it was a thick paste. It took him a little time to make it and he was silent through out. Making sure he was careful with the amounts and texture. Finally, after he was satisfied, the apprentice picked up a clean stretch of cloth and smeared the paste into it. He made sure it was evenly distributed and that there were no clumps of herbs. He wanted to make sure it was smooth. So, it would be as comfortable as possible for Sia. Chunky herbs often got clumped in fur and were just generally annoying. Eventually he returned to the mates with his possible 'remedy'. By now he smelled particularly strong of the mix of herbs, but he wasn't all that concerned about it. He paused beside them with a the cloth. "Alright, here we are. I'm going to lay this over your eyes, Sia. It might be a bit cool at first but it'll warm soon." He leaned forward, his tail brushing her shoulder in a comforting gesture. Carefully, Mercury laid the cloth over her eyes. When he was done, the apprentice leaned back. Giving Sia some space again. "Let me know immediately if you feel any tingling or stinging. Nothing should bother you but everyone reacts differently to certain herbs sometimes. So, be sure to tell me. The last thing we want is to irritate them further." he looked between them a couple times. "I think it would be best for you to stay here till at least tomorrow evening." His red eyes rested on Udi. "Your welcome to bring her anything more to make her comfortable." He paused. "Of course, the cubs are welcome for a little bit as well."
The scent of verious herbs have grown stronger and filled the whole den when Mercury stepped aside to prepare the treatment he had talked about. She waited in silence, only her ears or tail would twitch sometimes. Sia tried to hope for the best, and just not think about it but relax and wait. But she wasn't the best when it came to staying relaxed. After a whort while Mercury returned to them. Sia nodded at his words, and the corner of her lips curved into a slight smile when his tail brushed against her shoulder. At least she claimed it was his as Udi's fur felt different. "Alright, I will." The she-cat nodded before resting her head on her paws, taking a deep breath. She'd definitely like for their cubs to come over sometime, though not right away as she was feeling more tired since having drunk that tea a short while ago. But it was definitely helping her to relax more and so was Udi standing beside her.
Udi stayed with her, Mercury giving them some peace as the snow leopardness drifted into a quiet slumber...
