Description The long-awaited time of my Birthday has arrived! Yep, yep, your red Crystal has turned 27 today, and in honor of this, I offer you something quite special.
I already told you about many Backwings from the LotFC world. However the main species was neglected to be mentioned, until today…

Softheads - The Legendary Giants

Those creatures are by far one of the most widespread and numerous of all Backwings. Large Softheads mostly reach the sizes of Threehorns, however there were exceptional individuals who sometimes reached sizes similar to that of a Longneck. Their complexion can be described as thin, along with very long legs, which, coupled with a long tail, allows them to be quite fast and agile on the ground.

Identifying this Backwing is quite easy. They have elongated horns which grow in the occipital part of the skull, between which lies a fluffy mane which runs from the forehead along the entire length of the neck. Their skulls are elongated and end in a beak that looks like an eagle's. In most cases, their nasal bones are even. However, there may be individuals with thickened nasal bones, which form a kind of "lid" or “armor” over the nostrils.

Their second distinguishing feature is the ulnar spikes - growths of the ulnar bones, which serve as an additional defensive and offensive weapon. Their tails end in various kinds of outgrowths: from feather fans to various bone formations. On their backs is a pair of long powerful wings, which, with their elongated shape, allows them to glide over the air for a long time.

Softheads are omnivorous Backwings, which greatly expands their diet, and therefore allows them to populate larger territories. They prefer to hunt small Backwings, with the preference to hunt primarily PrickleBacks. From plant foods, they prefer juicy leaves, fruits and berries. In extreme cases, when food is very scarce, they can even eat and digest the roots and bark of trees. They also sometimes eat fish and shellfish.

They live in large groups, populating a large territory. When there is a lack of food, they can migrate, but this happens quite rarely. The group is led by a leader or a dominant couple. The leader status is passed down from generation to generation, however, there is the possibility to change the dynasty. For example, if a certain member of the group is not happy with the current leader and/or his actions, he can challenge the leader. If the leader loses, the title of leadership will be passed onto the winner. In the event of the death of the leader by natural death, by accident or during a battle, and he did not leave behind an heir, the new leader is elected democratically. In addition if their successor is too young to take on such a role, leader's close friend or a relative takes the leadership. Their mate can also take on that role. They are the "regent" until the successor of the previous leader grows up. The main functions of the leader are to protect the herd and resolve some serious conflicts.

Each Softhead in the herd finds a mate for life, thus creating strong families. Each clutch of eggs can bear up to 5 eggs, and by the color of the egg shell, one can determine what the hatchling’s colors will be. The hatchlings hatch without horns, although they start to grow out by the age of six months. Also, unlike the adults, they have a thin but strong membrane between their toes which allows them to swim, however as they grow older, the membrane would recede. Their horns also have a stunning variety, from straight to curved. They can even branch as well.

For the most part, the Softheads are peaceful, calm and friendly Backwings. They only show aggression when they or their families feel threatened. Despite their predatory diet, they are able to get along with many other species, including Earthstompers (If they would be able to break the language barrier)

Although one mustn't forget that this is still a Backwing with horns, a beak and strong paws. Anyone threatening their herds or families will be in serious trouble since a single strike from one of their wings is enough to send a Stingtooth flying a couple of meters, and the Softheads are strong and agile enough to take on a Twofeet. Plus, a group of 5 year olds could easily handle a Stingtooth or a Fast Biter.

Draigar is shown here at different stages of her life. (Sizes are not accurate.)
