That one almost didn't make it! As I write this, I juuuust finished the background. I'm not super happy with the way it turned out, but I'm struggling to find exactly what it is. Either way, I don't have much time left to post it so I have to let it go! I'm happy I was able to finish it at all and participate in the Clancy ride, so it's not too bad Hope you enjoy it either way !

Celestine kept waking up the night before the Clancy Ride event. Maybe it had been the nerves, but most likely, it was the storm outside that had periodically woke her. The wind had been howling and the rain had been falling so hard it felt like pebbles were being thrown at her window. She tried to force herself to fall back asleep, but the anxiety couldn’t really be fought against. She just hoped the storm would calm down by the time she had to get up.

Stepping outside in the morning, she was met with the wreck left in the storm’s way. Trees had lost branches and water had accumulated everywhere. The mud was unavoidable, and she gave up on trying to walk around it as she went to the stables. She could feel the excitement in the air as she came in, and talked with a few contestants, wondering if the event would still take place.

As they got confirmation that the Clancy Ride was happening, Celestine felt weird. She didn’t know if she should be happy or not. On one hand, she was relieved they had not come all the way here for nothing, as this was the main event she wished to participate in with Oberon, but on the other hand, she was worried the trail might be arduous and even dangerous. She tacked Oberon anyways, and made sure everything was well tied before hopping on his back towards the warmup area.

The rain was still present, and Célestine felt a bit cold. She hoped the physical exertion would help warm her up. Oberon, however, was fine. Nothing seemed to really bother this stallion, and rain or shine, he would still give his all. Walking towards the starting line, she however felt doubt. Was it really worth it? The conditions were less than ideal, and she didn’t want to risk injuries for one class she could always participate in another year. She couldn’t reach a decision, however, before it was their turn to go, and so she slipped into her competition mindset, and decided to go for it.

The trails were horrible. The mud was everywhere, water was overflowing and the grass was slippery. There were downed branches and debris everywhere. The association had visibly tried to clear some of them from the way, but the bigger pieces couldn’t be moved in time. Célestine decided to take the safe approach and go slowly across the path. Oberon, however, was of another mindset. He was ready to go, excited to run around, not understanding that there were many kilometers ahead of them.

Célestine let the stallion blow off some steam when more energy was needed, like going up hills, through flat meadows and over obstacles. Holding him back in between those tasks became easier and easier as they advanced on the trail. It seemed Oberon finally understood that they were here for a while.

When they reached the veterinary check point, you could see steam emanating from the two, obviously working hard in the cold environment. They were cleared to continue and picked the medicine satchel which Célestine put in their saddle bag. Off they went on the second part of the journey. They braved the elements, giving their all, Célestine thinking ahead of time about how she would relax afterwards. She couldn’t wait to be dry and warm.
