For the Open Quest Board - My Horse? - Pt.3
Story:
My Horse? (Part 3): What a time to be alive! Those tacos were really good, and the perfect distraction as he waited for Fabian to figure out where to go next. Sadly the sound of the car and a honking horn were the last things they needed if that horse was to be found in the fields, but you were able to stay on the well-used path. Nearing the end of the field you notice a little muddy puddle with lots of deer prints... wait no... those are foal prints! A foal was playing here... and look at that! You can see where mom must have spooked at the horn. Looks like they kept on down the trail, I bet they live near by!

Fabian gave a slight huff, still not entirely confident of how to cope with the moody teenager, but hey, he just had to try and track down the horse. Still, they rode along calmly, until Fabian managed to catch sight of some tracks on the ground…
Wait.
For a moment, he thought that those were deer tracks, but he took a closer look. Those were definitely foal tracks! “Down there, I think a foal and another older horse went down there!” He tapped Vara on into a trot, down the trail.
Chris followed behind at an easy-going trot, giving a little yawn, “Good, let’s wrap this up.”
Fabian rolled his eyes at Chris’ rather lackluster response, but gave a sigh, picking up into a canter, they followed along the trail, keeping close to the tracks. The horses didn’t appear to be moving at much pace, which meant that they couldn’t be too far down the trail…
True to Fabian’s expectations, they opened up onto a clearing, Fabian reining Vara in, they came to the sight of a pretty grey mare, with a dark slate grullo foal lay down next to her. He gave a slight frown, looking at the two horses, who were watching them guardedly but making no effort to leave them, which he certainly found unusual, at least, normally, the foal would have got up.
Was something wrong?
“Chris, I think there might be something wrong with the foal… we should try and drive them back to your dad’s and we can get them both checked out…”
“Why?”
“Because it’s ill, and these are two pretty decent tharoksus at that, there’s no use letting it die if it can be saved…”
“Aren’t we supposed to like, let nature do what nature does? We don’t need them.” They clearly weren’t any of Dave’s horses. Not with those colors...
“No.” Fabian rolled his eyes at Chris, “They’re fine enough horses, and we can take care of them, if the foal is ill, that doesn’t mean it should just go ahead and die.”
“Well, you can take care of them.” Chris didn’t want some shitty excuses for horses. Especially not sick ones.
Fabian didn’t answer that, he already had an idea in mind in regards to what to do with these horses, and like fuck could he afford more medicine. “We’ll flank them on either side and try to drive them back in the direction of the stable, it should be fairly easy.”
Chris frowned and pulled out his phone, tapping away at his screen, not paying attention to whatever Fabian’s plans were to wrangle the horses up. He gave a generic, “Mhm, Yep, Cool, Sure, Uh-huh.” He had no interest in some flank and drive mission like they were some cowboys out of the west. This was the twenty-first century, for Christ’s sake. He pocketed his phone and looked up finally, “I’ve got it handled.”
Fabian eyeballed him warily. What the hell did Chris mean ‘he had it handled’. “Uh… what?” He gave a sigh and rolled his eyes “come on, let’s get going.” He rounded onto the right hand side of the horses, gesturing for Chris to go to the left. The sooner they finished this, the sooner he didn’t have to tolerate Chris.
Chris sort of meandered to the left, just biding his time, really.
The foal looked concerned and nuzzled its mother, nervous about the strange looking horses coming their way. They made weird noises and smelled funny.
The mare, too, seemed uncertain, her ears swivelling back and forth for a moment, she lowered her muzzle to the foal, flattening her ears for a moment at the people, she nudged at her baby to get up with a low snort. The baby struggled a bit but got to its feet with a grunt and snort. It coughed a little and flapped its little fluffy tail.
Chris looked across to Fabian, “You better not get my horse kicked. She looks pissed.”
“Don’t get too close to her then.” Fabian responded with a roll of his eyes, bringing Vara round to the side of the mare to push her forward. The mare giving a snort and a toss of her tail, picking up into a brisk trot, but trying to keep her foal as near her as possible, snorting warily.
Chris grinned, he could hear the twirl of a rotor in the distance gaining on them. He chuckled, “You know what, that was some solid advice right there. Deal.”
Over the mountains, a little black blob popped up. The hum of a helicopter was closing in. Not that it was strange to have a helicopter in the distance, but this one was headed right for them at an alarming rate. And then Chris gave it a thumbs up.
The wild horses immediately took off in a panic as the loud, metal bird in the sky hunted them down. They bolted and ran for their lives.
Fabian had already been getting nervous already, he’d seen that grin from Chris and he really didn’t trust it. And then he heard the helicopter.
And then he saw the helicopter.
“Chris?! What the fuck?! I seem to remember saying the foal was ill! And you chase it down with a helicopter?! It’s not that far to your dad’s stable!” He cued Vara into a gallop after the horses, he waved his crop in Chris’ general direction, glaring down at him.
Chris laughed and galloped after the horses. He shrugged, “Just being efficient.” Keep up or get lost. It was working...technically...and they’d be back in no time at all!
Fabian was on the verge of throttling Chris, and coming up with some excuse to Dave why his teenage son was dead… he was fairly certain by this point that Chris wouldn’t be missed, and Dave would understand.
After a quick gallop back, there was an open paddock that the horses ran into blindly. Chris swung off Birgitta and shut the gates with a cocky grin on his face. The helicopter pilot lifted off and returned to the city. His bill was already paid.
“Chris, go get your Dad.” Was Fabian’s sole instruction, glaring down at him as he pulled Vara to a halt, sliding down off of his back easily. Idiot child.
Chris rolled his eyes behind his sunglasses. He didn’t understand why he thought his method was unsuitable. A little run did the body some good or something like that...besides, if the foal died from it, so be it. That’s how nature worked. At least he could be done with Fabian and this stupid task. He took Birgitta’s reins and started to head for the barn to tie her up.
Fabian may not have been able to see the eyeroll, that didn’t mean that he didn’t feel it.
Dave had heard the helicopter and came jogging out of the house, “What in the world?” Did he just see a grey horse go sprinting off in his field…
“Your idiot...I mean delightful” Fabian’s expression said otherwise “son, just decided to chase back a couple of wild horses with a helicopter, rather than your average drive back. The foal doesn’t appear to be doing so great, but the mare seems in good condition…”
Dave thought the helicopter was a useful thing...oh, well, until the sick foal. He gave a little disappointed look in Chris’s direction (who shrugged it off), “Well, uh, that’s fine and all, but those are not my horses.” He watched the pair go galloping across the field. Definitely not. Was that a grullo?
“Well, seeing as there are two of them, and Chris did so well. In helping to bring them back. I was planning on taking the grey mare, but I think it would do your son some good to look after the foal, give him some responsibility and so on.” Fabian gave a wry smile.
Chris and Dave both looked at Fabian like he was insane. They both turned their noses up at the thought and both gave a , “What? No.”
Fabian continued with a roll of his eyes “that foal requires medicine, and as I’m sure you’re both fully aware my financial situation doesn’t make for great dealing with vet bills, which means, Chris, I think you’d benefit from taking care of that foal.”
Chris looked at the foal. He really didn’t want to play “nurse” for some weird looking horse. It wasn’t even trained. How old was it even? Surely, this was the shit end of the stick. Some sick little foal? Stupid. But...he looked over to Dave who looked absolutely disgusted in the horse. He could use this to drive his dad insane. It would be hilarious. He grinned, “Yea, dad, it uh...needs our help...and shit.”
Dave whipped his head back to Chris, “What!?” He thought they had been on the same page for once! What was this sudden change of heart!?
“Well that’s that settled then I suppose.” Fabian gave a grin, he saw exactly what Chris was doing, and although he didn’t like his reasoning, it worked in his favour.
Dave looked betrayed, hanging his mouth open, “Fabian…” he recollected himself, and fixed his shirt and whipped his hair back into shape, sighing heavily. It could teach Chris a thing or two...he hated how ugly the little thing was but he didn’t have to ride it. It would be Chris’s solely...not like the disaster of Hakuna...Dave stepped in that one. “Fine.” He pointed to Fabian, “But, we are even.”
Fabian looked entirely unconvinced on them both being even, frowning for a moment at Dave. “Alright…”
They were definitely not even, not after what he had to live through.
