"Uh- what now?" Jarin's deadpan expression gave away his misunderstanding. Surely. Sasha and Garret had just expressed how thankful and grateful they were that Jarin helped to put Foxy on show. Not an instant to complain about; she showed splendidly! All for the sake to have her graded for Chris who was supposed to have purchased her already.
"No, we haven't received any payment yet for her," Sasha explained. "We thought you were going to have those details for us as well. We agreed to have her graded and then he was going to send the payment after."
"So, he just needs to pay you then?" Jarin made sure he had all the details before panic-calling Chris. He never said anything about money!
Garret nodded to confirm the fact. "Otherwise, we'll have no choice but to go to the next buyer. Afraid we can't hold on to her. We've got a long ways back home. We can't cover the travel expenses for another round on top of the medical expenses our other filly is going to have." It was just how the business operated. First come, first served, no reserves, no holds.
"J-just gimme a sec!" Jarin laughed nervously. "I'll call him real quick! I'm sure he just got hung up with riding or something!" Jarin paced down the barn aisle, immediately calling Chris again. At least, now, it should be a reasonable time of day! He didn't know whose voice it was the last time that told him "no horse stuff" for a few days but this was an emergency! Jarin's stomach dropped, hearing the call go to voicemail. Oh no. Did he really mean it? He wasn't going to take any calls for a few days? Oh no. Why now!?
Okay! Plan B! Jarin paced back and forth faster, calling Chris several more times just in case and leaving a few frantic messages. Just in case! But in the meantime, he had to come up with something! He didn't come all this way, make all this effort, ride her through all that work just to lose her to the next highest bidder! Chris gave him this mission! This was his favor to fulfill! Failing this was as good as not loving Hakuna . Jarin would never. Jarin looked at his phone one more time, feeling a sweat crawl across his skin. Oh boy.
Jarin tried to walk casually back to Sasha and Garret with a friendly smile on. "Got it sorted! I guess I just wasn't paying attention," he laughed lightly. "I'll be paying you for her."
That was a long plane ride home. Jarin stared at his phone screen longer. What used to be a sizable savings account, now decimated for this beautiful horse. It wasn't the first time Jarin had dropped money for an expensive horse on impulse but this one had an extra digit like Jarin never knew before. Even with the discount they offered him for helping out. Chris would make it right. He wouldn't leave Jarin in the hole like this. He hoped.
"Shit." As soon as Jarin started babbling about the whole ordeal with the money, Chris realized the issue. He had meant to send the money. In fact, he was growing a little paranoid due to the fact that he was pretty sure he had sent the money. But, of course, that goddamn Fang pulling him away from his business just long enough to cause him a headache. He was in the thick of a blunt when this whole transaction was supposed to take place. One of a few things must have happened: Chris never sent the money, Sasha and Garret just lied and got double the money, or Chris just sent a lot of money to an unknown source.
"It wasn't a big deal! I could cover," Jarin smiled.
"I'll pay you back," Chris sighed. He was not going to let Jarin know that this was either Chris's mistake or a massive con. Best to just lead the monkey away from the situation. "Give me your banking info and I'll have it sent to you."
Jarin looked into the round pen that Foxy had been let loose in to stretch her legs before she was tucked away to settle at the stable. She was walking around to look at the new scenery, listening to the other horses calling, and sniffing the residual smells in the pen. "What's your plans with her, anyway? She's a really nice ride."
Chris logged into his own banking info on his phone, not looking up to admire her. He already watched enough videos and if Jarin survived riding her then she was bulletproof. "Mmm, I dunno. Broodmare, probably."
"You don't know?" Jarin was baffled. Unfathomable. Buying such a beautiful mare and not wanting to ride her right away!? "B-but she's really easy to ride! She'd do really good for you in showjumping! Or dressage! But I know you... don't..." his voice faded.
Chris glanced from his phone to Jarin, "And she'd make a good dam too."
"Well, I-" Jarin frowned, not realizing he was being analyzed. "I just think she'd be better in the show ring!" He smiled until he saw the blank stare he was getting back. "I-I could sh-show you if you want!"
Chris blinked, his neutral but firm gaze unwavering. Unsurprisingly, Jarin had gotten attached. First, his weird obsession with Hakuna and now this. It was getting childish. "How about you let me manage my horses how I decide to?"
"R-right, b-but…" Jarin knew he was already over the line. He looked back to Foxy and back to Chris again. He just- Chris just didn't seem to appreciate horses like Jarin did! He abandoned Hakuna while he was such an awesome horse to ride and now Foxy was just going to be a broodmare? But all that work and training… "But you know…I… I'm the one who bought her." He said it without thinking it through but he didn't regret that he said it either.
Chris's brows lowered on the offense, "And I'm trying to pay you back."
"I signed the bill of sale," Jarin added, leaning back until he physically had to take a couple steps backwards. This was dangerous territory. It wasn't like he didn't trust Chris! He just… wanted better for Foxy.
"You're seriously doing this?" Chris asked cold and flat. "You owed me this favor: go get-"
"Go get this horse and make sure she was graded while she was there," Jarin interjected. He was absolutely not making any eye contact at this point. "And I did that. There she is," he gestured to Foxy.
Chris couldn't believe it. There was no doubt that Jarin was fucking stupid but this was a whole new level. Fine. If he wanted to play this bullshit game just when Chris was trying to honestly move past their shit in the past, fine. Eat shit, Jarin. Chris smirked. "Well." He changed his tone to a false calm as he put his phone away since there wasn't going to be any monetary compensation now. "You enjoy that."
Jarin dared to look back, wondering if Chris really was giving her up. It wasn't like he really wanted her if he didn't even have a plan for her! He started to smile before Chris came back with his venom.
"Consider that the only horse you're going to take from me. I was considering giving you Hakuna."
Jarin felt the blood in his legs drain out of his feet. Hakuna? For real!? Wait-
"But you're going to be busy with your little pony, there. Guess that’s for the best. I wouldn’t want him interfering with your grand plans seeing as, you know, he’s not near as special as the mare is.” Chris could have kept going, honestly. They were nowhere near even for this bullshit stunt. But that certainly drove a dagger into Jarin. Bitch. Chris huffed and turned on his heel to leave Jarin to sit in his own shit pile but before he got too far, he did remind Jarin, “And you do still owe me one more favor, asshole.”
Jarin shriveled into his husk of a body. Was he going to say that favor was to give Foxy over to him? Was he going to lose not one but two horses today? He didn’t feel like he was in the clear until Chris shut the barn door behind himself. And even then… Jarin felt torn in half. Because he thought he was doing what felt right to him, he just missed out on the opportunity of a lifetime with Hakuna. But he didn’t want to just give Foxy over either. Was this really right? Chris wanted this horse. Who cared what he wanted to do with her? People bought horses for all different kinds of reasons all the time! Jarin didn’t even ride all of his horses consistently. And yet… there he was. Owner of one expensive warmblood and feeling like he just ate a piece of poisoned cake. So sweet and delicious but might be the death of him.

WELL this was not how I had envisioned this event going.
"Jarin, give Chris his horse."
"He doesn't even want her. She's not grey. He'll never ride her."
"That's his business. Give him his horse."
"...but but but... nuuuuu"
"Jarin, don't fuck with Chris. This is not one of the characters you can dork around with."
"Weeeeehhhhh I'll love her!!"
"You have plenty of others to love!"
"WWEEEEEEHHHHHHHH"
jfc :''D
So uh, ya know.... I think they both kinda cucked the other honestly xD Jarin just heckin' sniped a horse out from under Chris. Not cool. Chris just absolutely played the guilt trap card. Not cool. Just when I thought these two were off to level grounds :''D nupe.
SO, who knows what's in store for Foxy in the future xD I honestly thought this might have been it but with Jarin just waltzing in and making decisions (wow, good for him to have a damn spine - impressive) who knows!
At least she got some fun arts <3 For something that was supposed to be "simple" lolololol she is just too satisfying to shade to be "simple"
