Morning turned into afternoon and there was no sign that this trail was leading anywhere useful. Eventually, the straw trail tapered off and even Griff didn’t seem to have the same spark. Jarin noticed he was looking rather tired from the endless running. It was a good thing he took Griff on a lot of his runs so he had some stamina to deal with the run.
When they hit the clearing, Griff veered off to the side and looked at Mack like maybe he saw something his nose couldn’t because he had lost the trail. Mack looked at Griff and sputtered to a halt, giving a snort. Griff looked up at Jarin, panting and wagging his tail like he was waiting for orders.
Sydney slid Corona to a halt next to Jarin. He gathered the dog lost the trail… he leaned an elbow on the saddle horn and looked over to Jarin, “So, what now, Oh, Captain, My Captain? Real crackin’ job so far.”
Jarin didn’t like all eyes on him. What did he know about tracking!? “Well..uh…” He fanned his hoodie, feeling rather hot under the summer sun. Mack was doing alright, a bit sweaty but they never got out of a trot so he was coping. Corona looked like she could go all day at her easy-paced lope.
Sydney rolled his eyes and dismounted from Corona, “I gotta piss. Hold my horse, would ya?” He chucked Jarin the reins, knowing Corona wasn’t going anywhere without a command to do so. But it was nice insurance. Horses were horses and did horse things…
Jarin scrambled for the reins and about slid off sideways. He watched as Sydney was seriously sauntering off for a distant bush to relieve himself. He sighed. Might as well take a break before they headed back. It wasn’t like Jarin actually had a clue as to what to do beyond this point anyway. What else could he do. First off, he could take off the hot hoodie.
As soon as Jarin stepped off Mack, Griff collapsed to the soft, cool grass in a panting heap. For him, it was about time for his afternoon nap anyway! Jarin took pity on his poor pooch. They could all use a bit of a rest…okay, maybe Jarin was just tired of posting the whole way…
He stripped the tack off the horses and piled it off to the side. He trusted Mack enough without a bridle. It was hot so naturally Jarin felt the horses deserved a cool down without tack! Their bits might be hot!
Sydney finished up his business to turn around and see Jarin…one of the world’s wonders on how stupid a human being could be…strip off the horse’s tack!? He picked up the pace back to the horses before the all ran off and they were stranded in a field, “What the hell are you doing!?”
Jarin was just tucking his hoodie in with the rest of the tack as Sydney yelled to him. He didn’t think he was doing anything wrong! They were just taking a break! “I was just letting them rest.”
Sydney grumbled, “And leaving the bridles off!? How dumb are you!?” Sydney was quickly approaching the situation to fix it before something got out of hand.
Jarin had set the satchel with the weird rick thing on the ground when he stripped the tack off. He ever so slightly bumped it as he moved out of Sydney’s way. The flap came open and out rolled the odd rock looking thing. In the summer light, it glistened like a gemstone. It looked like it had metallic flaking on it.
The crew (sans Sydney) stopped to admire it, leaning in, lost within its sparkles. So pretty.
Before Jarin knew it, he had spooked backwards about five feet. DID IT JUST MOVE!?
Jarin’s spook triggered a chain reaction with the other animals. They all launched backwards as well.
“This is what I was talking about!” Sydney growled, trying to calm the situation before the horses bombed off. HE WAS NOT WALKING BACK.
“Wait…” he looked at the weird egg, “…did that thing just move?”
