~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Clouds welled in the sky above. They looked black and nasty like a gang ready to riot. Trixie could hear thunder in the distance. She made herself mentally ready for the rain to follow. She didn't enjoy rain but it was all part of the circle of life. Without it, the circle would be broken. It was necessary.
With that in mind, Trixie set off for the trees. The wind didn't blow quite as hard in the shelter of the trees. She would still get wet but not soaked. She had several hills to climb to get there first. The humans hadn't bothered with her for months. She had been turned out for quite some time. She didn't mind if they just forgot about her and left her alone. She had plenty of food, water, and space to roam in her large pasture.
They always insisted n coming out to check on her. Trixie followed rules diligently. She'd never break one. She knew where the fences were and knew those were her boundaries. She knew the humans fed her three times a day and exactly the same time. She saved them the hassle of looking for her and always met them at the fence-line. She never had to be scolded because she never put up a fight.
The more she was left alone, the happier she was. She found it quite stressful to handle not only herself but company made it worse.
Trixie had just about made it to the treeline. She looked to the sky and thought she saw a slight break in the clouds. 'Maybe the storm will move out.' She didn't want to take any chances and kept on for the timber. She had just picked out a thick oak tree to stand under for when the rain came when she heard a familiar sound. Her heart seized.
It was the sound of a human whistling for her. They had a distinct whistle for when it was time to some in and eat.
Trixie looked to the sky, 'Could it be!?'
She couldn't see the position of the sun! 'Have I miscalculated the time!?'
Trixie bolted from underneath the tree and made haste for the fence-line. She could hardly hear the whistle over the roar of the wind in her ears. 'No. No. No. No. No!'
Trixie was panicking. She was never late! She never needed to be caught!
Through her panicked state, Trixie hardly saw the bundles of feathers she plowed into. She heard a terrible shriek. It was loud and horrendous enough for her to slam on her brakes. She saw several chickens scramble into the bushes. All but one pile of feathers left behind. Trixie felt like her hooves had been bound to where she had stopped.
The feathers weren't moving. It was too many to just be from the panic she inflicted onto the flock.
'No...please...'
She trembled and forced herself to break the hold that had her in place. She walked closer and already knew what she had done within the first couple of steps. In her blind run, she had trampled the young bird. She stamped the life right out of it. Who knows what it was doing before then. Probably happily eating bugs with its flock.
Trixie felt tears form in her eyes. It was irrational to be upset but for some reason she felt crushed. She felt like she broke a rule larger than herself. She felt small and corrupted. She took its life without a thought.
The tears slid down Trixie's cheeks. She lowered her head to the fuzzy creature. This was a mistake she couldn't mend. She couldn't just undo death...
She felt the sun's hot rays pour over her back. It lit up the small clearing she was standing in. This was not something she could accept. She could ignore the calls of the humans. They could wait. She could not ignore the loss of this creature's life by her own doing. The more she thought about it, the angrier she was at herself. She just wanted to take it back. She just wanted this bird to have its life back!
The pile of feathers budged.
Trixie thought it was just her watery eyes deceiving her.
The furry chicken gathered itself to its two feet and shook the dust from its feathers.
Trixie stared in awe. She knew it had been lifeless not but seconds ago.
The bird looked up at Trixie and gave a soft peep.
Trixie didn't know how to respond. Had she done this? She knew her kind was capable of magic but she never guessed she'd be good enough to even light a candle. But, here, stood a small chicken that was lifeless seconds ago.
It didn't matter. What mattered was that it was okay again. It got back what it deserved.
Trixie smiled and turned to leave. The humans needed her after all. This time she would walk. They could wait.
The tiny chicken peeped loudly and chased after Trixie.
Trixie tip-toed around it, careful not to hurt it. It followed her every footstep - diligent to stay with her.
Trixie didn't have the heart to turn it away. She felt responsible for what she had done to it anyway. She knelt down to her knees, hoping it would hop into her back. The little bird gave a mighty leap and landed between Trixie's ears.
Trixie returned to her feet and carried on to the fence line. She'd watch out for the bird as long as it thought it needed her. She owned it her life...
Another spur of the moment art piece done xD Stayed up way too late to finish this but it kind of happened like a landslide. So, my secret love for chickens it out. The little Silkie in the piece is actually based off my own <3 It actually made me upset to "kill" my beloved bird. But now he gets to stick with Trixie <3 Overall, pretty satisfied with this piece! Almost quit in the beginning because I'm not good at the forward-facing angle xD Glad I stuck with it! NOW - NOTHING SHALL HARM MY SILKIE
