So first I always put the flat colors and wait for them to dry completely.And then for the shading I use a dark purple with a little more water,so is not that intense.(If you want your shadows to be much darker don't add water to the dark purple).It's really important to wait for the flat colors to dry really well,because that can make the color used for the shading to bleed and combine with the other colors.
Also,in general,with watercolors if you want a nice flat color,don't use that much water.
