Description
Adobe Photoshop, mouse, 1995.It's really interesting to look back at this and remember what it was like in 1995. There wasn't anything like deviantART, the internet was in its infancy (had to ftp everything), and I had to draw this picture with a mouse because I couldn't afford a tablet. And do it all at low resolution because I couldn't afford any memory. It was also back when the major American comic book companies were just barely getting into computerized coloring, and I was trying to build a portfolio.
Anyhow, I scanned the basic sketch and mostly used the lasso and gradient tools, although there are some places that I brushed. I used some strange combination of filters (no clue what) to get the background.

That's quite a glorious piece you made. Jean is a lovely character whenever it be looks or attitude.

This is pretty bloody impressive for a mouse, regardless of the year!
I love the shading in her hair--it accomplishes much with very simple lines. No small feat, that. But I must say, the best part about this piece is that you've slimmed her outfit down somehow. I mourned this outfit--I thought it was utterly hideous *chuckles* (then again, at the time I saw it first, I was twelve), but there were some artists that just made it look even bigger and clunkier than it really was. The 300th issue comes to mind--the pockets were immense in that one; and I remember that earlier on, while I despised Emma Frost as a character when she reigned as the White Queen, she looked so classy and lovely in comparison to the good guys that I very nearly forgave her all her wickedness.
Ahh, I was a shallow likkle beast at times. XD

Heh - thanks so much. I remember things taking forever do do by mouse alone, but it was all I had so I'm not sure I knew any better. I'm glad you like it...
Funny how different artists have such completely distinct takes on a single character. I think I first saw this outfit with Jim Lee drawing it -- I don't think I disliked anything he did. But I didn't enjoy the artists that followed nearly as much, and didn't keep following things after a while. Must be about when I got interested in Hellboy or something...

Dang, even if this is all mouse-used lasso & gradient, the result is goooood!
Love her outfit. Heh, the "no code name" years!

Wow. Even if this was done in '95, I think it looks gorgeous. =]
This outfit was always my favorite of hers, and you did a fantastic job. ^^

I always enjoyed this outfit too. I think the lines and colors were good -- and I never minded Jim Lee drawing anything. I'm glad you liked it -- thanks for telling me!
