Description "Sheath your weapons!" Elder Venave shouted to the armies that stood at his sides.

He had rushed here as quickly as he could to keep this situation from getting out of control, and he was almost too late. On his left were the visitors from the sky who called themselves the Damned of Scipio, a cult of Chaos. To his left, the militant traditionalists of his species, led by his long-time colleague, Warchief Haruk, who were demanding that the Chaos aliens left Serrasal or be killed.

"I will not cower in the face of these aliens as you have, Venave," Haruk shouted at his former ally, refusing to stow his spear away. "The forces of Chaos have given our people the ultimatum to join them or be destroyed, but I am here to offer my ultimatum - leave or be killed!"

Haruk spoke with articulation not expected of a xenos native, but his Low Gothic was as refined as any citizen of the Imperium of Man, an indication of the adaptive and learning capabilities of the Serrasal. He raised his spear above his head as a declaration of war, and most of his warband followed, showing their pride and resistance towards their alien guests.

"I am afraid that conflicts with my mission, Warchief," Kryze began his reply, with his chainsword at his hip, ready for any violence that could break out here. "The forces of Chaos are cutting a swath through the Ork forces of this system on their way to Gilranth. You are lucky to have the chance to join us at all, as my comrades would be more than pleased to rape and pillage this world. I see potential in your people, and I would not like to see it squandered by your ignorance. If you refuse to join us, then your planet will burn."

"Both of you, stop this," Venave intervened, "These lands must not be defiled by bloodshed and needless violence."

"Enough, Elder!" Haruk shot back, with his gaze still firmly on the leader of the Chaos Cult on the other side of the grove, "I will not let these invaders endanger our people. As Warchief, and am declaring the Damned of Scipio and all of the forces of Chaos to be enemies of the Serrasal!"

"No!" Venave exclaimed, "You cannot speak for all of Serrasal!"

"Silence!" Haruk replied with fury in his eyes, ignorant of his surroundings and the murmurings of his warriors, "I am the voice of Serrasal. We will not tolerate these aliens - we will crush them as we have done to the Green-fleshed before them."

"I knew it would come to this," Venave spoke despondently, "Our people are divided, Haruk. On this and many other things. You and your ilk cannot keep our world bottled up as you have. Through Chaos, we will finally evolve, and throw off the shackles you have forged. I have united many in the capital, and we are rising up against you!"

"Treason!" Haruk responded with a mixture of shock and rage.

"Yes!" Venave shouted back, triumphantly. "Treason against your tyranny. The people have spoken, and they side with Chaos"

haunting laughter from behind them broke their concentration, and Haruk turned to see his men in a circle, with their weapons pointed outward against the thunderous footsteps of Chaos footsoldiers.

"Hahahahaha. This is all so delicious," Kryze interjected with a wicked grin on his face, and a nefarious gleam in his eyes. "I knew your eyesight was bad during the day, but I was expecting you all to have noticed my dropships on the beach, and my soldiers encircling you. Lay down your weapons, Haruk, not that they would do you any good anyway. You are surrounded."

Kryze could hear the nervous gulp in Haruk's throat as he peered around through his sonar to see his men completely surrounded by the malevolent masked soldiers of Chaos; their advanced guns aimed inwardly at his men, and their zig-zagged masks shrouding the evil smiles on their true faces.

"You cannot hope to defeat us, Kryze," Haruk yelled at his opponent with false courage, "If you kill me, you will only have the rest of Serrasal to fight, and my people are stronger than you could possibly imagine."

"Ha!" Kryze mocked, "I seem to be under the impression that your proud people now stand divided - now we will see how they fall."

"You are a fool, alien!" Haruk replied, defiantly.

"I am many things," Kryze began, "Today, I play the role of executioner. Men!" Kryze ordered with his hand raised; his men arming their weapons against the frightened, but adamant warriors of the Serrasal, "Fire!"

Venave looked away from the blinding flashes of lasguns as they blasted through the iron armor and shieldsilk of the warriors, who were thrown into too much disarray to respond with any force. The terror in Venave's eyes and the pain in his heart was in stark contrast to the villainous grin on Kryze's face, and the warmth in his heart. Today began the conquest of Serrasal.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

And so begins the Serrasal Civil War, a four-month conflict between the Serrasal Traditionalists and the alliance of the Damned of Scipio Chaos Cult and the Serrasal Progressives.

I would first like to say that there is a shout-out to Superman the Animated Series somewhere in here. Can you find it?

On a more Warhammerish note, this war will be covered in the next couple of updates, but isn't too important to Chaos overall, however, it is a very important part of the Gilranth Crusade that will also be covered in the future. The Serrasal Civil War is also considered the most important event in Serrasal history, and is the foundation of their citizenship in the Outcastes (what the Damned of Scipio eventually become).

The next couple of vignettes will mostly feature frontline soldiers of both sides over the course of the four months, so stay tuned. Also, I haven't come up with a name for the dropships the Damned of Scipio are using (pictured in the background), so if anyone out there comes up with a good one, I'll probably accept it. Also, yes, the title is a nod to Dawn of War, the 40k video game.
