In preparation for an upcoming community event, I been trying to master the art of drawing caricature straight up with marker without any pencil under drawing. I drew like 5 bad drawings before deciding to switch to pencil. Then, all of the sudden, it was starting to flow. Still trying to make decisive lines, as one must do with ink, but it helps to be able to make adjustments to search for shapes.

Also, I been focusing a lot of techniques to improve composition and line work. This has been extremely helpful, but sometimes you got to remember to take a step back and use your intuition to “see” more. Otherwise, your work starts to look like it got lost in the woods.

One artists advice was to “Draw ten. Repeat.” Good advice, except you can’t fit ten squares into a nice and neat grid. So I am adapting it to “Draw nine.” Simply because I like 3x3 grids. I just do.
