Lemon spots danced within the sunlight as it filtered through the green canopy above. Winter hadn’t long passed, yet its hold over the land disappeared nearly instantly. Which was just what the Huntress had hoped. Normally the work-driven hound would be hunting for the Vryheid, but today she had something else in mind. Something that caused a thousand butterflies to flutter in her stomach and her mind to grow foggy. Something that when she thought to hard about it, it would make her so dizzy she couldn’t tell which way was up or down. Something that caused jitters in her bones. She had been nervous before, but this was unlike anything she had ever felt before.

The Huntress had risen long ago, to wound up to sleep in. Today had to be perfect. Delicate legs pulled her into the forest as soon as she rose for the morning, determination colouring every inch of her features. It was there that she found the perfect stick. Dragging it out onto the sandy ocean’s sure, she began her masterpiece. Jutting the stick into the sand, she engraved a mandala into the shore. Carving away at the wet sand as the tide receded. The hound worked tirelessly under the suns intense, watchful gaze. It was around midday, when the sun was at its highest peak, that she finally finished the sand art. It was perfect, covering a distance of around 50 meters. Though, the waves had tainted a few of her lines but it only added to the charm. Or so she hoped.

Everything was finally ready, all she needed was him.

The hound freshened up within the ocean briefly before going to find her most trusted companion. The dog who she had confessed her feelings for a little while ago. His ghostly silhouette turning her most boring day into her best. She had never felt this way about anyone before, never. He had accepted her as she was, with all her faults, never even asking her to do the same in return. It was a love, she felt, was eternal. It went far beyond simply being soulmates. It was so much more. As she paced through the forest, she stumbled across him.

He looked so majestic, illuminated by the sun as it shone solely on his silver pelt giving him a celestial glow. She stood there for a moment, adoring him in his element. But it would seem he noticed, turning to her with a brilliant smile. One that was promptly returned by the lemon spotted Huntress. “Take a walk on the beach with me?” Though it was a question, she stated it rather than asked. There was no room in the tides schedule for delays.

It took little convincing for the Lead Hunter to take a stroll with her, which is always a good sign. As their paws brought them closer to the marked spot in the sand her nerves grew, and she could barely hold the conversation. It wasn’t until she was certain that her favourite love had noticed her work that she turned and faced him. Nerves displayed clearly within her stormy orbs, even though a bright smile decorated her maw.

“Ger,” Her pet name called out for his attention, “Since I have known you, you have made me feel accepted, complete, and have shown me the true meaning of happiness. I feel that, by your side, we can do anything.” She paused, staring deeply within his pale gaze. “Today, I would like to give you my heart and unconditional love, completely and forever… If you will have me?”

Some would say that the sunlight is the light that comes from above. That it warms the sand and the sea and the air, that it washes darkness away with each sunrise. Geronimo guessed that it wasn't terrible to see it that way. Not many were lucky enough to see it as he did.

Sunlight. Sunlight is the feeling when you imagine someone and realize that the mere thought of them makes you smile. Sunlight is a hug. A word. Three - I love you. But it is different to everyone. Geronimo was lucky. Lucky that his sunlight was a bouncing piece of heaven. Lucky to be walking alongside her, right there, right in that moment.

When she had asked him to walk on the beach with her, he had put up no resistance. He had not wondered why, he had not questioned whether Genevieve had gone looking for him or if it was just a coincidence. He needn’t know. Her company was relaxing to him and that was it. Ever since they had confessed their feelings to one another, he felt a different sort of truth building between them, he didn’t have to feel nervous or to conceal anything. She knew he loved her. And she did as well.

As they set foot on the warm sand, the ghost felt his companion drifting apart, as if she was nervous or her head was elsewhere. But it didn’t take long for him to realize why.

Ahead of them laid something unlike anything he’d seen before. A great portion of the sand was carved in circular motives that swirled and spun into each-other. It was beautiful, but more importantly it was her work. The work of Genevieve, his dearest friend, his love. A smile took over his maw as she guided him to the center of the drawing. He knew what a mandala was, and having lived with a human who enjoyed both art and astronomy, he also knew that they represented the universe and its unity, although he wasn’t sure whether Gene was aware. It didn’t matter, it still made it more special inside of his mind.

“Gen, this is outstanding.” He couldn’t contain his smile as he looked around him. But it wasn’t until his companion’s next words that he would truly understand the drawing was for him. Realization flooded him all at once, quickly being replaced by happiness and warmth. She had gone through such trouble just for him?

Fire engulfed his core as he heard her words. He had always deemed power to be the only thing that could ever grant him happiness. But there, sitting with her in the sand, he knew that to be wrong. Because just thinking he could have made her as happy as she said he had proved him otherwise. “Genevieve, I love you.” Sunlight. “So much. Ever since we’ve met, you’ve made me realize so many things, you’ve made me stronger, and happier. You always stand by me no matter what, and that means to me more than you could ever know.” The shepherd made a pause, the sound of the ocean clashing against the rocks was powerful yet calming, as was the whispering of the water advancing onto the shore before its quick retreat. “Nothing would make me happier than to be with you all my life.”

All his life he had thought love was something that mortals were inclined to feel. They searched it, longed for it, cried it. But this love had appeared without any search. Without any need. It just had.

And needless to say, it went far beyond any mortal tendency.
