I think that was due to a combination of him being added at the last minute (seriously, I was very tempted to leave it as 3 characters; also explains why he was a bit poorly thought out and useless) and me being lousy at drawing blokes.

Maybe he looks so cocky because Yuko and Ria were instilling over-confidence in him for this very reason. They figured "Hey, if we're gonna be chased by some crazy boss monster and he thinks he can fight him, we could get, like, a ten second head start!"
