Ohanzee learned two very important things this day. First, humans traveled in larger packs than he remembered, and second, even if they were tamed, not all human’s horses had it out for those of them that were wild.
They had almost made it out of the canyon. The first two humans and their horses had been completely oblivious to the wild herd sneaking their way around the boulders. They could see the canyon’s end, the blue sky beckoning up ahead. Ohanzee took the herd to a quick canter. Then, the last rider rounded a corner. Ohanzee’s herd barely had time to hide. Cherry skidded to a stop behind a boulder just ahead of where Ohanzee stopped. There was a gap between them. Tanner barely stopped Zuri from darting ahead of them to catch up with Cherry and Taima. The filly gave him a look, but the moment she saw how tense he and Ohanzee were she frown and swished her tail. Cherry pressed her rump against the rock she found herself next too, and she used a leg to keep Taima from retreating back toward the rest of the herd.
Ohanzee flared his nostrils and carefully peeked around the boulder , his ears perking ever so slightly. This last rider was moving quickly and it was looking all around. They were most certainly searching for something. Ohanzee’s heart nearly sank when the bay turned it’s head rather quickly in their direction. It caused the stallion to drop quickly to his knees to make sure he was hidden. He caught Cherry’s eye from across the way. She looked panic stricken but at least she wasn’t moving.
Ohanzee listened as the human made an aggressive noise at the horse. So at least it didn’t know they were there. Ohanzee was grateful the humans seemed less observant. Cautiously he peeked back over the edge of the boulder. The other horse was still looking their way and their eyes met. Then, with a snort, the bay shook his mane out and started forward, almost immediately breaking into a canter. Ohanzee watched, grateful as they worked their way away from his herd. As soon as they were out of sight, Ohanzee leapt up and moved to Cherry’s side, nudging her up. “Let’s go, quickly.” He grunted, “Before they come back.”
