Other It was my first kiss ever. It was completely unexpected and well…perfect. Absolutely perfect. I had dreamed about that moment my whole life. Never before had I thought that he would be the one who would give it to me. Before six months ago we had hated anything having to do with one another and now here he was kissing me. I wasn’t even aware of when or how my heart had changed towards him. It had just snuck up on me and soon I was struck. How is it that two enemies had grown such intimate feelings for one another?

**flashback**
“Hey Katara!” I heard the sneering voice behind me. When I turned around, there he was. I ignored him and my eyes wandered towards the man of my dreams, Toka.

“Hi Toka!” I said sweetly. He turned towards me and smiled. I heard Hitaru snort behind me in disgust.

“Hi Katara! How are you?” he asked politely. That’s one of the things I liked about him. He was the most popular boy in school and every girl was dying to talk to him. The second most popular boy was Hitaru but I could never been interested in him because he was such a jerk.

“I’m good. How are you?” I asked back, batting my eyelashes at him.

“I’m good. We have a soccer game today.” His eyes meandered to Hitaru. “Oh hey Hitaru. Are you going to make it to the game today?” Toka was captain of the team while Hitaru was a midfielder.

Hitaru answered simply. “Yeah.”

Then Toka turned back to me. “Are you going to watch our game today?”

“Sure! I would love to come!”

There was a look in Hitaru’s eye, as he turned to leave, that confused me. I watched him walk away with his chin high but still with that strange look in his eye. It made me feel a twinge in the back of my mind. I felt guilty but I didn’t know why.

That’s how it was between us. I would get annoyed when he came around and he would continue to come around everyday. But when Toka would join us he would get quiet and when he would leave he would always have that same look in his eye. It would always confuse me. But then things started to change.

**flashback**
I was sweeping the floor of the store I worked at. He was in the same aisle stacking cans. We didn’t mean to get the same job it had just worked out that way. It was a hot summer day. I had gotten a part-time job to make some extra cash for my parents. I was wearing my black work pants and a polo shirt with a green apron over it. I had my hair tied back with a white ribbon. He was wearing the same. The store was empty for it was lunch time.

“Katara?” His voice surprised me with a softness I had never heard come from him before.

I looked up at him. He was looking at a can in his hand. Then he looked up at me. The look was in his eye again. It always made me feel guilty but now it made my stomach feel sick from guilt. “Yes?” I asked in an annoyed voice.

He up at me. His brown eyes held a softness that I had never expected to see. “What do you think of me?” he asked.

I felt my stomach clench. “Wh-what do you mean?”

“I mean…do you hate me?”

My eyes snapped wide in surprise. “Hate you?!” I was about to say yes but I found that my heart wasn’t behind my answer. “I-I suppose not.” My eyebrows furrowed as I thought about what he had asked me.

That was when I first realized that I didn’t hate him. Then he would walk me home from work everyday. He would barely speak to me unless to tease me or to ask me a serious question. He was constantly dizzying me with his mind tricks. But in the end I learned that the side he would only show me at certain times was his true side. His side that he kept hidden from the world. But I would soon find that out.

**flashback**
We were walking towards my house after work. The sun was beginning to set and the clouds were dyed a redish gold color. Hitaru was silent beside me. I had let my hair down that day because I took a shower in the morning and it wasn’t dry yet when I left for work.

Now the stars were beginning to twinkle in the sky and the temperature was dropping. I felt myself shiver from the cold. Hitaru handed me something. When I looked down I saw his blue blazer in his hand. I looked up at him in surprise but he was still looking forward. “Thank you,” I thanked him, truly grateful, as I took it from his hands and placed it over my shoulders.

We were about to pass under a beautiful oak tree when I felt his hand grab my hand to stop me. My eyes wandered down to our hands and then back up to his eyes. I found myself lost in his eyes. The honey specks swirling around in his chocolate eyes. He lifted my hands up and gripped them tightly. Then he spoke.

“Katara. I’m sorry about being a jerk to you. I didn’t mean to act that way. It’s just that whenever I’m around you I can’t be how I wish to be. I wish that I could just come out and say how I really feel about you but everytime I try to either Toka gets in the way or I say something rude.” I could feel my eyes widen and my blood rise to my cheeks. I was shivering again but not from the cold.

“Wh-What are you saying?” I whispered.

His hands left mine and then I felt them on my neck. They were gently gripping it in their grasp and pulling my face closer and closer to his. I felt myself giving into his pull. Then we collided. His lips to mine. His were warm and gentle. I closed my eyes and let him kiss me.
