Though at the same time, really awful graphics can (sometimes) indicate a very rushed product (as seen with cases like Bubsy 3D, which you can tell was rushed right out the door).

Yeah, complete with clunky controls.
Speaking of Bubsy, what could possibly go wrong?

I wouldn't say that there is no precedent for graphics over gameplay.Β Back in 1989, the Sega Genesis debuted and it had 16-bits compared to the NES's 8.Β So many people felt that bits were all that mattered when it came to how great game consoles were.Β Bits only seemed to be related to graphics, so in those days, marketing seemed to gravitate towards graphics over gameplay.Β The funny thing is, the higher bit consoles didn't do so well in the sales department.Β The 24-bit Neo Geo, 32-bit 3DO, and 64-bit Atari Jaguar combined for roughly 3.25 million worldwide sales roughly one-fifteenth the sales of the Super Nintendo.Β Later, the 64-bit Nintendo 64 was outsold by the 32-bit Sony Playstation on roughly a three to one ratio worldwide.Β
The only example that I can think of in terms of better graphics triumphing sales wide in those days that I haven't mentioned yet is Donkey Kong Country.Β It used pre-rendered 3-D graphics and Nintendo took advantage of this opportunity to give Sega a well-deserved taste of its own medicine by saying that this game was only available on their "inferior" console and did not need any add-ons to play.

Not to mention We can prefer gameplay over content and character design.
I mean, People liked DmC, even if Dante doesn't look and isn't the same. And most people play Street Fighter V, even with the lack of content it had on launch. Not to mention the gameplay in Street Fighter V has no glitches or bugs that can ruin the game. Sadly, they ignore the gameplay because they want a "complete" game with all the content and characters because they think content is important to make the game look "complete".

Eh, SFV kinda sucked compared to other games like Guilty Gear Xrd, which plays far better in other aspects. SFV just made me feel like playing Third Strike.

It's funny that when some gamers bring up the Wii, they complain about the apparently 'terrible graphics' and ignore everything else, yet when they talk about the NES they scream 'Don't judge gameplay over graphics!'

I mean, good graphics are nice to look at, but the game is the most important. If graphics meant everything, than Tony Hawk 5 is the best damn game ever.

Chucko: Bonk...
Bonk: Your day is over old man! Even if you are who you say you are! And personally, I think you're a fake!
The Joker: Ah, brave new world, that has such putzes in it!

Videogames and movies have one thing in common: the plot and the development are what really count.

X6 had High Max and Infinity Mijinion, cheap screen-filling bastards! Both are mandatory bosses sooner or later!
X7 has Flame Hyenard, Ride Boarski, massive slowdowns, the battle against Red, and that one Water Boss that I despise.
I'll say that X7 is far worse. I won't even mention Axl...

I heard Silver was impossible. At least the fight with him in Generations (PS3/X360 version, haven't played 3DS one yet) was fun

No he's not impossible. You just gotta time EVERYTHING right. One slip-up, and you're fucked.

As good as this is, really good graphics can make a difference. tiny and Big anyone? What kinda irritates me is when games fall back on retro style for no real reason. You can give games simple graphical styles (Dustforce) while still looking really good.Β
Regardless of that rant, the most important thing to me is fun.
