Description
altstadt of dresden, germany.
The story of this city. Dunno how many people are familiar with it. During WWII, Dresden was bombed so fiercely that the very bricks melted - and it was a civilian city, a culltural city, with no real military or strategic importance. They bombed it and destroyed it and thousands died. This wasn't bombing factories or logistical routes. Yeah, Germany started the war and committed plenty of atrocities. Doesn't mean the Allies, the "good guys" didn't either. Such is war. So it goes. In the past but that doesn't mean we should forget about it.
Since then... that is, since the reunification, so much of Dresden has been rebuilt. But it's still obvious. All those exquisite old buildings are rebuilt as checkerboards of freshly quarried white bricks and old bricks sorted out from the ruins on the ground.
I'd really, really highly recommend Slaughterhouse Five, by Kurt Vonnegut. He was a witness to the bombing as a POW; it's a fantastic book and some of the insights into human nature are... quite important, in my mind.
At any rate. Dresden.

I love Slaughterhouse Five. It's one of my favorite books. I identify with the hobo very much, and I'm scared I share the same fate.
