This here's the thing I've been streaming WIPs for and teasing at with various other pieces in my gallery.Rarity's mane really seems to work on Pinkie...

Oh boy...
the sort of ozone-layer-destroying chemicals released from an aerosol can of hairspray is exactly why hairspray has been banned in Ponyville. We Ponyvillians--or Rarity to be more specific, since almost nopony else styles their mane as meticulously--tend to look for more Earth-friendly methods of achieving that lasting hold. Rarity claims--and personal studies I've performed agree--that hair gel, although just as effective as hairspray, tends to leave... oh, how did Rarity put it...? "Icky lumps of goo in one's mane by the end of the day, which is absolutely not fabulous."
Mousse, on the other hoof, tends to not leave those "icky lumps of goo" as often, and is usually Rarity's preferred choice for styling her mane.

I'm just getting started. Now, as you may or may not know, no matter what the choice for holding one's hair in place, every method seems to leave the mane...hardened and looking like it's made of plastic. I've asked Rarity how to remedy this, and she suggests brushing through the mane once it's dried until it becomes soft again. If all goes as it should, the mane should look as soft as before the gel, hairspray, or mousse was applied, but it should also still retain the shape you put it in using the styling apparatus.
Now, in Pinkie Pie's case...

Oh yes. Pinkie Pie. Assuming her hair is truly as wild and unruly as it seems, your theory would prove correct that she would need to use a lot of the aforementioned styling apparatus to ensure it stays styled like Rarity's. However, where you're wrong, as proven above, is that she would not use hairspray and would instead choose either hair gel or mousse to achieve that desired lasting hold.
I don't know if I know pinkie's personal habits well enough to determine which she prefers or whether or not she sought Rarity's help in getting it to look just right, but judging by the softness retained, I can safely assume she at least brushed it out after applying the styling apparatus.

Yeah...could be because I had to use a different shot of Rarity for her, since her head was turned toward the viewer instead of 3/4 like everypony else (but fluttershy).
