Description
Hey there!Oh, c'mon, it wouldn't be Villain Month without the Count!
Count Olaf, the sinister 4th cousin 3 times removed (or is it 3rd cousin, 4 times removed? ;D) of the Baudelaire orphans from Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. That was a mouthful! Olaf is a dirty arsonist, an alcoholic, and a rotten schemer, but perhaps worst of all, he's also a horrendous actor but thinks contrarily.
I felt it was necessary to paint Olaf for Villain Month because, even though the end of the books was (to me) pretty bad and the character himself had really transformed from being absolutely terrifying in the first book to becoming Jim Carrey's goofy film portrayal of him by the 11th book, the Snicket books are a big part of my teenage years. I spent a long time being positively obsessed over them (my old AOL screen name was Baudelairefan6 - no longer active, I assure you), and it would seem wrong to leave Olaf in the dust this month since he really did start off as being a great villain.
In fact, the Snicket series has many great villains, not the least of which are Olaf's wretched associates, so don't be shocked if some of them pop up for these next 20 days of October.
Regarding the image: I'm surprised at just how well it turned out. I started with a really messy and amateurish sketch of Olaf and then used a painting method that I learned from a tutorial here on DA and swear by since then, and the piece just kind of unfurled! I think this picture looks pretty good regardless of whether or not it's just a doodle.
When drawing this image, I kept wondering how the old me (13, 14 years old or so) would feel about it, and I think I would have really liked it back then. Baudelairefan6 gives his approval, I suppose. ;D
Anyway, enjoy the image! Let me know your thoughts.
Adobe Photoshop, about 40 minutes total.

Goddammit yes! I love Count Olaf so much; I remember reading all of the books when I was a little girl, and man...this guy was one of the reasons my childhood was so sweet. He's just so......words can't describe the Count!

Thank you! The rough brush strokes are custom brushes I built in Photoshop CS. I dunno that I still have those brushes...I've since switched computers so some things got lost in the process, unfortunately.

Woah! That just gave me chills, man
Probably one of the better Count Olaf fan pieces out there. The fire in the background is crazy. It goes perfectly with Olaf, you know, with the arson problem and all..
I love it!

Glad you like it!

I do! I miss your Unfortunate Events fan art...that's how I first got introduced to your art, you know. Looking for fan art
Although, unlike a lot of other artists, you do draw other things beside fan art, which is something more artists should learn to do.

I'm glad that my ASoUE fanart is remembered fondly. Unfortunately, I wasn't too enthralled with the end of the books, and it's also difficult for me to continue fully enjoying something that is no longer in activity. One of these days, I'd like to do a new ASoUE fanart, something really big and fancy and detailed just to pay tribute to something that I loved so much and took up so much of my attention, but for now, I feel there are other things I must work on. I'm sure you can understand that. ;D
And yes, there are some artists who will sadly never move beyond fanart. There's nothing wrong with some fanart just for personal enjoyment, but the truth is, it won't get you anything of any real value (whatever you consider valuable, not necessarily money).

Yeah, we can only hope that the series continues again in some form or another..maybe through the eyes of someone other than the orphans. Hm.
Of course I can understand, as long as you do that big fancy fan art someday, sometime.
Fan art IS nice, it's just not something someone should stick to without producing anything original of their own.

I'd personally like to know what the question mark thing in the ocean was. And whatever happened to the Quagmires? Those are the biggest mysteries that could use some answering.

That's what I wanted to know, too, what the Great Unknown was. I certainly hope Snicket elaborates on that in the future...I believe it said the Quagmires were captured by it, or something.

DrewGreen In reply to DarkAdolescent [2009-01-02 17:30:47 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I vaguely remember that detail.
I remember there were very small rumblings before the books had ended that Handler might write the Quagmire's story or something...like, what happened to them after they were captured by Olaf and such. But that may have just been rumors.

dude, okay, so one of my professors for art history looks EXACTLY like count olaf, he has GIANT bushy eyebrows and his hair is all bald like that and he just...it's amazing the resemblance, me and my ex roomie always use to do the dinosaur thing that the count does in the movie as we walked out of the room lol

I kind of liked the silly, odd things - although a few of them did bother me. I DID notice how the Count pretty much evolved into the character that Jim Carrey played, instead of the evil, sinister character he was at the beginning. Since I watched the movie before I read the books, that was the biggest difference I noticed when I started reading them.
They tried to make him out to be less of a bad guy than they thought at the end, when he clearly was a sinister murderer.

DrewGreen In reply to BAMillustration [2008-10-18 18:45:28 +0000 UTC]
I think that was my biggest gripe with the last 3 books: Olaf had become Jim Carrey's Olaf when before, he was a horrible, menacing, hygienically challenged murderer. He became a goofball, and at the end he was made out to be something of a good guy (sort of). I was unimpressed.

BAMillustration In reply to DrewGreen [2008-10-19 13:17:17 +0000 UTC]
I agree. I wouldn't have minded if they would have gone one way or the other, that in the end it was all a misunderstanding, but from the earlier books it was clear that he was evil. Oh well.
