Description Hello!

Yay, this one is on time and with a couple of hours to spare! Who would have thought?!

Representing day #12 of October, Villain Month, I give you Raphael the Raven of Yoshi's Island fame, as he appears after you make him angry by ramming a pole into his bum (basically) by using your but stomp.

This is a pretty accurate representation of this boss battle, down to the star placement, since it was referenced from a screenshot I took back when I used to play games on emulators (I don't do that so often anymore). This boss battle, while not particularly difficult, was really unique in that the stage you fought on was that tiny little ball. You and Raphael could run all around the ball and never fall off, almost as if this very battle was the precursor to Super Mario Galaxy. When fighting Raphael, it was easy to get dizzy because as you ran, the background would move causing everything to turn upside-down. It's difficult to explain, so go find a copy of this game somehow and get to this boss battle so you can experience it!

Yoshi's Island is a beautiful game that really stands the test of time in sprite animation and art style, so much so that the sequel found on the DS looks almost exactly the same. By the way, the DS game is really hard and I've never actually managed to beat it yet, so if you're looking for a challenge, be sure to pick that one up.

Anyway, I hope you like it and I'll see you tomorrow with another villain!

Adobe Photoshop CS, about 45 minutes total.

Raphael the Raven is (c) Nintendo, this image is (c) me, Andrew Green.

Yeah, well I could see how that could be a useful thing. I had a friend who was really into that. But I dunno, I really like supporting the people who make great games, and if a game isn't great, I'm probably not going to be playing it (I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to picking out good games to play).

same here, but there comes a time when some games u cant find anymore like tetris DS (god that game is freakin hard as balls to find) also, games that wont even come out here (like jump ultimate stars)

Yeah, I could definitely see that advantage. Of course, you could also import games (since the DS is region-free), but that can get incredibly expensive.

also, some games have patches and yea the whole expensive part would affect, especially if u dont have a job TT_TT

Yes, mid-90s, I think. The SNES was released in...93? I think so, anyway.

Thanks a lot! Glad you liked it.

Thats superb! He was one of my favourite boss characters too, I loved the way the scenery span as you did, I was really impressed with it at the time, no other platform game could do that so easily! Brilliant colouring too!

Thanks! I think it's still pretty impressive, actually. The fact that a boss fight makes you dizzy is pretty neat.

Yeah totally. In fact, that picture has made me all nostalgic, and I may very well go get Yoshis Island and have an old crack at it again. Loved that game so much! Haven't played the DS version yet, though.

The DS version is fantastic, but extremely difficult in my opinion. I recommend it, though, especially if you're nostalgic and in love with the SNES original.

I may very well incest in buying it. I assume its been remade slightly then, if its harder? Can't wait to try it now!

When I say version, I meant sequel (sorry I wasn't clear, that's my fault). It's really a fantastic game! The catch is that you have to strategically switch between babies - there's Baby Mario, Peach, Donkey Kong, Wario, and Bowser (don't remember if Luigi is there - I think he might be who you're trying to rescue). It's a really neat new addition to the game that makes it even more challenging because sometimes you have to pick the right baby to use. I definitely recommend that game!

Rootay In reply to DrewGreen [2008-10-15 07:36:31 +0000 UTC]

Wow, sounds even more better now! Different babies. And I thought having one baby cry all the time was bad enough haha. And it seems to always be Luigi who gets kidnapped. Also, I'm sure this must mess up the timeline for future mario games as well lol. Well, sounds like a definate buy....when I have enough cash that is

DrewGreen In reply to Rootay [2008-10-15 22:11:22 +0000 UTC]

Thankfully, only one cries at a time. But yeah, Baby Mario's cries give me a headache, and that is no exaggeration.

BEST BOSS FIGHT EVER. Yoshi's Island actually had a lot of really unique and surprisingly challenging boss fights. It's an amazing game. Love it.

....Might also be the reason why I found Yoshi's Story so damn disappointing. It just didn't live up to Yoshi's Island at all. :'(

I think my heart skipped a beat when I saw this in my inbox today, haha. I love how you emulated the style of the game, especially the background! Those constellations cracked me up, and that mindboggling "OH GOD WE'RE ABOVE THE CLOUDS THAT'S HOW FAR UP WE ARE FFFFFFFF" feeling added to the insanity of this level

Yoshi's Story was cute, but really easy, I agree. Yoshi's Island was brutal, and the DS sequel is even harder, if you ask me.

I'm glad you like the image! It was a wonderful boss fight and I was glad to draw it for Villain Month.

that was my all time snes "most addictive game." My favorite boss was the frog when your stuck in the stomach, I replayed it so many times... but anyways the art was really amazingly done I hope they won some sort of creative award for it or for game play.

DrewGreen In reply to livelyarsenic [2008-10-13 15:53:38 +0000 UTC]

Addictive is the perfect way to describe that game, yes. And yeah, I remember being inside of the frog's stomach! Wow, I hadn't thought of that in a while. ;D

OH. MY. GOD.

This was the first game I ever owned, and, truthfully, probably still my favorite to play. Raphael scared the 6 year old shit out of me, but it was such a fun (and dizzying!) challenge.

This is fantastic, and, like, 5 million points for doing the only Raphael fanart I've ever seen. You even have the goonie constellation

YES!

Thanks! The goonie bird constellation was actually in the background of the boss battle, so it seemed only natural to include it here, as well.
