Description
Hey there! It's day 22 of Villain Month! Today, I give you Dr. Neo Cortex, made famous as Crash Bandicoot's arch nemesis way back in the PS1 days (the best Sony console, in my opinion).
Cortex's motives were never very clear to me. I'm sure he, like many other video game doctors, was looking to take over the world or something. Doctors in video games seem to like doing that (take Dr. Robotnik, Dr. Wily, and all of Cortex's Dr. friends and associates, for instance). Most of the time, they use robots and missiles and stuff to do all of their evil bidding, which leads me to believe that most of these doctors were probably nuclear radiologists and robotics experts before they were villains. I'd really hate to imagine what a former gynecologist would do...
Was that out of bounds?
Anyway, I really love the old Crash Bandicoot games. 1, 2, 3, and Crash Team Racing are all fantastic, but beyond that, the games range from "meh," to "really bad." I think it's a darn shame Crash has been completely redesigned these days, and I'm pretty sure Cortex is no longer a part of the story. Oh well, at least I still have a working copy of 3 that I can play on my PS2.
Most of the image is fairly accurate, as he was referenced from the manual for CB3, though I realized after finishing the pattern for the Nitro box background that I forgot to actually reference that from the manual as well, and was too lazy to go back and change it. Oh well. Nitro boxes are evil anyway, so I really have no desire to pay any respect to them the way I do Cortex.
Alright, anyway, I hope you guys like it! I'll see you tomorrow with another famous baddie. ;D
Adobe Photoshop CS, about 40 minutes total.
Crash Bandicoot and Neo Cortex are (c) whoever owns them nowadays, though I know Naughty Dog used to make the games so I'll say that for nostalgia's sake. This image is (c) me, Andrew T. Green. It's not a particularly great image, so I can't imagine why you'd want to bother stealing it. Still, if the thought crosses your mind, please don't steal artwork because that's the internet equivalent of being trailer trash, and oh boy, what would the neighbors think?!

NITRO! Crash Bandicoot ftw.

Oh dude, I haven't played Crash Bandicoot since I was a wee, wee lass. My old childhood friend used to have it, and her older brother always let me play his file, but I never understood what I was supposed to do. Ah, young was I...
I remember this guy though. ^^
Perfect interpretation, and again, love that textured custom brush.

Thank you so much! If you're interested in achieving the textured look that I have going here and in many of my recent images, I made a quick tutorial on how to make that brush. Feel free to go check it out! ;D

I did check that one out, but, as I said, I don't really have a decent colouring program. I suppose I could make some attempts with the "I'm cheating my trial version" openCanvas though -- I really want to try that brush. xD

Well, I'm not sure this brush can be achieved in its exact form in OpenCanvas, but hey, it's worth trying to mimic, right? ;D

The old Crash Bandicoot games are a lot of fun. They're a sort of different take on the traditional platforming games like Mario.
Glad you like it!

Haha, Crash Team Racing and Spyro the Dragon were probably the first two Playstation games I had. Fond memories, thars .
I also remember we rented Crash Bandicoot 2 but didn't have a memory card at the time, so I resolved to stay up all night in order to beat it, but I fell asleep at about 6:30AM .

Gaming marathons can be a blast, though. Of course, you have to blink every now and then or else you'll be in a world of pain by the time you remember to do so. XD

well golly gee, i guess we share some game likings too
i remember pretty much ALL i'd play on my PS1 was Crash3 and CTR, it was all so much fun, such a great platformer, and its really a shame naughty dog sold the franchise, everytime i see one of the new crash games my soul weeps a bit, the newer games are such a piece of shit that they dont deserve existence, especially when compared to the PS1 games which were GREAT, too bad the new developers only care about mooching off on the crash name rather than making a good game :C

Yeah, the Crash Bandicoot games have gone waaaaay downhill, and it's definitely sad to see. But at least we can still go back and play the old ones.

i dont play it too often either, probably a couple times every year, but i play through the whole game in 1 or 2 days XD

As in, you get all of the boxes/gems/crystals/other doohickies and 100% the game in one day? Because that would be tough for me. But to speed run the game just to finish it, that's manageable.

JAXMP In reply to DrewGreen [2008-11-10 14:01:58 +0000 UTC]
nah i dont get 100%, though i do get all the boxes in most of the levels, and with them the diamonds.
when i feel like i i go for the time trials, but that takes longer lol

Yeah, I know. I don't know what Naughty Dog is doing nowadays (though I'm pretty sure they might be operating under a different name), but the original Crash games were just wonderful.
Never was a big Spyro fan, but that's just a matter of personal preference as opposed to the games not being any good.

Psychotime In reply to DrewGreen [2008-10-23 06:02:47 +0000 UTC]
No, same name. In the PS2 years they did the Jak and Daxter series. Right now it's Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.
So apparently the way they work is one series each generation. Insomniac seems to work the same way, except they're continuing Ratchet and Clank.

DrewGreen In reply to Psychotime [2008-10-25 02:28:21 +0000 UTC]
I've heard good things about Ratchet and Clank, but haven't played enough to give my two cents.
I can't imagine focusing one one series for that many years. Especially since Uncharted: Drake's Fortune doesn't really seem all that interesting or unique when compared to the other franchises Naughty Dog has worked on. All I know is I really wish they'd return to Crash.
