Description
ForYou've seen the fairy boy [link] , now see the magic behind it. This is not a tutorial but a simple process I normally work with.
Steps 1 - 4
Photoshop. I start with a BW sketch using a hard round brush. Find the right composition, pose and main basic shape. No details, just the core idea.
Steps 5 - 6
Photoshop. Add a new layer, Overlay. This is where I take my huge round brush and throw random colors everywhere. I'm not looking for a specific lighting here - interesting colors is what I want. Then I take the colors down a notch to go for the right atmosphere.
Step 7
Painter. Add another layer for colors. Using oil pastel brush, I start painting in the skin tone and everything else around it very loosely.
Step 8
Painter. Same layer. I'm now switching between oil pastel brush and smeary palette knife tool to get a sense of lighting and color. Everything is still rough and sketchy.
Step 9
Painter. Same layer. Giving it a more saturated color, I've also begun to define some of its basic shapes and outlines. Still very rough in certain places.
Step 10
Painter. Paint for the finish. Everything is now being defined. I've added more color saturation on areas needed. Smeary palette knife is mostly used to give it style.
Step 11
Painter. Almost done. Smeary palette knife, loaded palette knife, oil pastel, blur, just add water, pencil tool are now being used to define and refine all areas. Dull, unsaturated colors are used on uninteresting places - saturation is placed on important ones.
Step 12 - Voila!
Painter. With a pencil tool I draw in the details. I make sure all is tight and nice with a good flow. Then I take it back to Photoshop for minor color-correction editing before releasing it to the public.

nice work man. its dope! i did have a question though. I know its not a tut, but when you go from photoshop to painter. how do you paint over the pic and keep the general form? the face for example. do you have to redraw the eyes and every thing or is there a way around this?

Spectacular work here. I always find it fascinating when an artist documents their progress. Learning how other people do things is very cool, not to mention the fact that I plan on using some techniques I learned from this. Again, great job.

Step 5 is where you lost me. I think I have no skill whatsoever when it comes to doing that. I always paint in B&W and it usually stays that way, I can't get the colors to blend into the image properly. But wow, Im so glad you made this. It's something I can reference when Im trying out different processes.

Thanks for posting thise, and your steps are easy to follow. Is there any reason why you start the sketch in photoshop and not in Painter?

cool process! ~ I never get used to painter though.... Maybe I should try sometime. it's just you know in painter, the little circle that indicate "brush" doesn't really indicate where your brush is, you end up painting outside the "circle", especially with bigger brushes. But I love the way painter let you turn the pages to an angle without actually "rotating" it. Really nice feature...
what's the difference between photoshop and painter in your opinion? when do you use painter, and do will you use photoshop?

Brush tip problem? Try Painter > Preferences > General. Under Drawing Cursor, make sure it's clicked on "Brush" and select the brush icon - should be the first one.
To me Photoshop is easier and faster to work with. I just happen to be comfortable using Painter as my primary tool. In the end, an application is just an application - just another drawing medium. As long as you can use whichever to your full extent, it shouldn't matter what you use.

Very cool process. Seems to be very natural without cheap tricks.
Why do you prefer the painter for the finishing touches?

no main reason. just a preference.

Awesome, step 5 is pretty interesting. And how do you get Painter to not crash on you? I've tried it three times now and every time I start working on something it keeps locking up and forcing me to restart it every few minutes.

drigzabrot In reply to Gamerhomie [2009-09-10 04:48:23 +0000 UTC]
Painter never crashes on me, if so, very seldom. My trouble is normally with Photoshop.

Question, how do you do the 'New Layer - Overlay" step? That produces a second layer that allows you to only brush color within the confines of your lines from the first?

anything not white will be affected - i believe that's all it can do, not sure of it's full extent.
