Description
Shajar al-Durr, the "Tree of Pearls", has the unique distinction of having ruled not only as the first Muslim Queen of Egypt, but as the Slave-Queen of Egypt. Her reign, which began in 1250, started the Mamluk era of Egypt. She wielded such power during her time that her reign saw the successful capture of King St. Louis IX of France, and she later ransomed him back to France for an enormous sum of money.
