Do you use photoshop? If so, try the different artist filters.

They still stand out a bit too much. Try this:
-Hide the background layer
-Make a new layer
-All you should be seeing is the characters. If not hide all but the characters.
-Go to Image->apply image
-With the new empty layer selected go to filer->blur->Gaussian blur Input 4.9 as the value.
-Click ok
-show all the other layers but make sure the new blurry layer is on top.
-Change the blending mode to one that'll look right. You might even need to change the opacity.
