Description
It has been over two months since a 1,000 results limit was enacted on DeviantArt whenever you search for Deviations, Groups and, oddly enough, Prints. This limitation was put in place without any official word from the staff or administration for weeks. Even the Help Desk was completely unaware of this change. Now, you will still be told how many results your search returned, but you can only browse the first 1,000 of those results.
There still has not been a site-wide Notice letting all users know of this considerable change to DeviantArt. (FYI: The original search limit was 10,000)
This fairly new limitation on all searches was put in place in order to significantly reduce the amount of errors we received from the search system crashing so often. This change to DeviantArt has only proven to be partially successful.
Most importantly, the new limit makes it so that if your artwork involves a popular or well-known topic, genre or franchise, it can be cut from fellow Deviants' search results quite easily if it is not among the 1,000 most recent or most popular, especially when a search returns tens of thousands of results or more. In some cases, but certainly not all, fellow Deviants may not be able to browse your Deviations using the search system within a matter of months.
In addition, the search system still crashes frequently.
How? Well, in order to delve deeper into the system and get around that 1,000 results barrier, you will have to refine your search terms. Thus, you have to run a lot more searches and even then it is far too easy to overlook artwork that you may have otherwise enjoyed.

About the search limit, I thought that it was just me. I didn't know anyone was having the similar annoying problem as me.

Yeah. The search limit applies to everyone. At least it was boosted from 1,000 to 2,500 not long ago. Certainly a step in the right direction, if you ask me.
Nice avatar, by the way! Is that Calcifer?

I would say getting to browse 10,000 results would be a lot more reasonable than just 1,000, eh?

Hello, and sorry for asking, but do you know if that 1,000 limit still exists? Because, I'm sorry to say, it's totally stupid and annoys me a lot.

No worries. Sadly, the search limit is here to stay. I wish I knew more of why it was put in place. Did DA's user base grow too fast? Did administration fail to upgrade their servers to keep up with demand? I have no idea.

The only thing I know about it it's that they put it to make the search faster. Something that I don't understand because for me the search tool was so good and only took some seconds to charge, so...
And besides, now with the 1,000 limit the search is very, very limited. If you search for general things like "flower", "cloud", "wolf", "cat", "dog", etc. I can assure you you can't see (normally) more than the 99% of the deviations. Something that of course sucks. Even for the fanart the numbers are similar.

Search speed was one of the reasons. The other was to eliminate or significantly reduce the occurrence of searches generating error messages instead of results. From my experience and listening to what other people have been saying, this move only proved partially successful with more negative effects than positive, if you ask me. Since the search system still fails regularly, I suspect that the problem is much more severe. Perhaps administration did not upgrade their servers enough to keep up with the fast growth of DA? Either that, or their hardware infrastructure simply has not seen a significant update in years. Or, the search system coding is severely out of date and is in need of being re-written from scratch? I wish I knew what the deal was.

I have no remotely idea, but I would really like this 1,000 limit to be erased. I prefer the search system to have errors more than having this limit, seriously.

DrMackFoxx In reply to trans2rotf [2011-02-13 18:47:00 +0000 UTC]
Ah! The search limit was enacted in order to significantly reduce or eliminate errors we users would receive when the search system would crash from over use. The problem is, since the only way around this barrier is running more and more searches, the system may be getting just as overwhelmed as before as the search feature still fails regularly.

It's REALLY crappy when you're trying to find JUST the right stock piece. Just because someone was underexposed or "unpopular" doesn't mean that they don't deserve their art to be seen. I've had to give up on some projects for lack of the perfect pose or stance. It really sucks.

Do or do not, there is no try.
I feel DeviantART may very well state that they wanted to try something out; so they either keep this, or take it away. :\ It sucks for those members from 2005 and before who are officially 'outdated' in the terms of their older work! D: I disagree with this search filter!
