Description
In Our Timeline, the Globidontan Eusuchians were animals confined to Eurasia and the Americas. Indeed, the familiar Alligators and Caimans are strongly associated with the latter region. However, on Alter Earth, a lineage of small basal suchians managed to make the journey into Africa. Descended from the Late Cretaceous genus Acynodon, a European form and the most primitive known Globidontan, the Bufosuchids first appear in the fossil record during the Early Eocene, with fragmentary remains having been recovered from Egypt, Niger and Chad. These were animals with very blunt rounded snouts and robust teeth, suggesting a diet consisting of hard shelled prey. All Bufosuchids were diminutive in terms of size, with the largest genera being less than 2m long. The Oligocene genus Parvochampsa was a fairly typical member of the group, being a 1-1.5m durophagous semi-aquatic carnivore. Dwelling in Kenya and Ethiopia, P. leakyi is known from several specimens including a well preserved skull that preserves the blunt, bulbous teeth typical of its family. Inhabiting the rivers and swamplands of tropical East Africa, Parvochampsa likely fed on freshwater clams, snails and possibly small turtles. It's Bufosuchid relatives are still alive and well in Africa during the Holocene, being native to the Congo river basin.Related content
