Description
One genus of Pterosaur present at the Middle Miocene Ramanagar site was a large carnivore. This was the imposing Scythiadraco, a robustly built soaring animal with a huge hooked beak and muscular thick neck. A member of the Azhdarchoid clade Smaugopterygia, which diversified significantly during the Miocene from modestly sized ancestors, this 10m wingspan genus was the bully of the savannah, easily intimidating smaller predators off of carcasses while also being able to take down weak or elderly herbivorous dinosaurs. During the Pliocene and Pleistocene, Smaugoptergians became members of the apex predator guild in Eurasia and North America alongside Caenodromaeosaurs, with some species reaching wingspans of up to 13m. Indeed, the global expansion of open grasslands proved very favorable to terrestrial Non-Marine Pterosaurs, increasing the scope of their preferred habitat. During the Late Pleistocene, Smaugopterygians could be found on all continents aside from Antarctica, reaching the zenith of their powers with the massive genus Nidhogg mortophilus, which was native to the Steppe Tundra of Eurasia as well as parts of Alaska and the Yukon.
