Random Facts
-About 11 months after they are born, antechinus will mate for a 1-3 week period. Male antechinus will fight over females and try to mate with as many as possible. A single coupling between antechinus can last up to 14 hours. This is extremely stressful for the male antechinus which causes them to produce dangerously high amounts of cortisol and testosterone. The males' immune systems begin to fail and they will die within a few weeks before their first birthday. Basically male antechinus have so much intercourse that it stresses them to death.

-A female antechinus will mate with multiple partners and store the sperm for up to 2 weeks. Only the sperm from the most ideal/strong partners will fertilize the eggs. It is common for a litter to have multiple paternity meaning that the joeys may have different fathers from each other.

Terrific. It makes me think of a drawing in a Victorian naturalist's journal while they are out in the field.
