My characters tend to be of normal strength (except for Tony who is descended from a god) so hefting this piece would require a mysticism of some sort. Fortunately for Velvet, that's right up her alley!

You got Frazetta's influences nailed down neatly. Hadn't thought about that, but yes, the oversized cleaver over the shoulder did make the cover of FF7 stand out. As for Velvet, your explanation that this is an older pic ... well, explains the differences in her look. She's so tall and angular here, Elvira inspired almost, and lately pictures show her soft and well rounded, and quite feminine, though we all know from experience that particular creature can be the most devilishly misleading of all...

Velvet's overall image has been a shank of iron I've been more than happy to hammer at in my little smithy forge. The original inspiration for her look and name, (which I'm surprized no one has called me on yet) is the series of beautiful models dressed all in black with a smattering of white that used to adorn the Black Velvet licquor ads.
She's come far afield from that having been influenced by my growing understanding of womenhood and specifically two young ladies (students at different times) who contributed to her visually by posing for me.

Actually, it was the first year I was at Poky. I drew the sword based on Something I had read years earlier about Frank Frazetta. He said the bigger the sword the better visually, so I applied it to this picture and voila!
