This is a great shot and totally original!!!

I really don't know...well yes I do!...be comfortable with a spider on my lens. I guess mind over matter or a real passion for spiders.

Since I only have a 50mm macro lens, I do have to get in close and I have had wasps on not only my lens, but neck and arm while trying to capture a picture. I had a small colony that came in to a waterer and hunt spider mites in tansy plants, and at which time I would try shoot pictures of them. Not showing fear was a real test for mind over matter, ha, ha, and I'm happy to say they seemed to accept my presence and so far I haven't be stung nor bitten by them. I did learn a lot about them though.

Anyway, this is a great picture and ID.

I should add, my daughter feels the same way about wasps that your son does about spiders.

I was in Germany a few years ago at a friend's place. He had two big cherry trees in a field and before breakfast and dinner I would go down and climb a long ladder up into the trees to pick cherries. The problem was there were hundreds of wasps there. It was amazing, they flew all around me but were so interested in the rotten cherries that I was immune from their sting and I was able to pick cherries with imunity. It was amazing bur a bit scary. Here in Australia we fear and hate the European wasp.

I don't have the same fear of spiders, but a great respect for them. Huntsman spiders like on my ID picture can bite but are basically harmless.

Thanks for your comments and the faves on 'Imperialis', 'Orb weaver 2' and 'ID'.

Ah, one of the giant crab spiders right? I think they're awesomely reminiscent of the tailless whipscorpions.

It is actually a Huntsman spider. I think you call them giant crab spiders in the States.

Oh, I just remember reading that Giant crab spider is their family designation.
Or is it in Australia? Gah, common names are so confusing xD

Great ID!
Our European Spiders are just too little to take such a shot.

You've heard of photoshop? Just get a little one, take a good macro shot and superimpose it on your ID photo! My one was really full size - no PS.

Thanks Martina. This was a fun photoshoot with my son petrified of spiders and trying to get a good shot of me and the spider. John.

It sometimes feels they're right on the lens with our working distance on average <10cms

Great shot John!

Thanks for your comments. Today I had a jumping spider that kept jumping on the lens. I don't mind them and huntsman spiders but there are some that I am not comfortable with.

You have some great pictures in your gallery.

I don't mind spiders all that much. It's wasps and bees that I'm uncomfortable around. I find myself saying in my head "If I don't annoy them, they wont annoy me" to calm myself down when I'm taking shots of them. I had a real phobia about bees when I first started out haha.

You too John, keep on takin' em!

He freaks out most people. My son wasn't really comfortable taking the picture. They don't bother me. John
