Official Critique PhotoArtists:

I am torn with this picture. I can't tell how you did this (Adobe Photoshop is a very versatile software and I can't tell what filters you apply either in the camera or in Photoshop).

Let's start by one point: The capture, in terms of artistic motif is perfect, and it brings a very human and cultural motif to the picture. You show a part ofΒ  Vilnius as a mix of something here in the west we are not used to: Ortodox Catholic monuments and circa XVIII and XIX century constructions. This, at least for me, is really exciting and the, let's call it "fog" gives it an eerie feeling that pierces your brain to your most primitive feelings, which is a very good thing to achieve with a picture, from an artistic point of view.
In terms of technique, I am confused as, the first impression I got when I saw your picture was an ancient city on fire. The issue? B&W. There is a rule that I follow strictly which is: If you want to convey a main motif with a picture, you have to make sure nothing stands in the way: If you had not transformed this into B&W, there would be no questions whether this would be fog or smoke from fire. This effect is worsened by the smoke coming out of the fireplaces/etc which, their source is hidden by the fog.
Further, The B&W, when used with foggy pictures, tend to result in grainy pictures which might have been what you were seeking, but in my point of view didn't add value.
In terms of framing, the picture is extremely carefully taken care and the lighting is also very interesting.
Overall It is a very culturally and artistically interesting photo.

Congratulations.

Thank You very much for the detailed critique!

Just for info - little story behind this picture concerning B&W conversion and Photoshop effects:
It was a foggy morning, distance to objects really big, so contrast was minimal and the dominating color was kind a light yellowish-green.
So I thought - since there are almost no color variations, why do I need color?
And what is even more important, B&W allows extreme contrast enhancements, and image still looks OK.

P.S. Actually I had posted color version as well, but it was not that popular to say at least

Perfectly good reason. Nevertheless I would like to see the original so I can appreciate the color. I love B&W, but we are born with cones in our retinas for a reason, so I'm a guy that loves getting all the information I can. If you agree, I'll then will give you feedback over the color version ok? Thank you so much.

Here is the link to color version : druteika.deviantart.com/art/Mo…
Please note, that it is not original - it was also edited for better contrast, but still remain very pale, I think.

I have to agree with you. The B&W version is better because it shows the details of the buildings that cannot be seen in the color version.

Hello,

Stunning photograph.

I appreciate that strange composition rendering multiple level of depth and spotted by church towers emerging from fog.

Very good work, congratulations.

Have a nice week,

Patrick
