Description
A poet, a really great poet, is the most unpoetical of all creatures. But inferior poets are absolutely fascinating. The worse their rhymes are, the more picturesque they look. The mere fact of having published a book of second-rate sonnets makes a man quite irresistible. He lives the poetry that he cannot write. The others write poetry that they dare not realize.Β
The second of three classic books my dad got me fifteen years ago that I only just now read is The Picture of Dorian Gray. It's a good read though I could go without some of the rambly-ness. The scene with... some violence was particularly interesting, especially since it was pretty descriptive for a book from the turn of the century. And of course the ending is great.
For anyone who lives under a rock (which may be most people these days), the book is about a handsome young man who stays young while a portrait of himself becomes older and uglier as he sins throughout his life.
While I was reading this at work someone asked me what I was reading and they had never heard of the book. WTH.
Anyhoo, here I've depicted the first change in his picture: his portrait changes from having a happy smile to one of slight cruelty. Why? Well, pick up a book and read! I ain't no spoiler-er.

I love the composition here! That portrait looks so sinister in the background, and I think you captured the feel of the novel really well

This literary classic is one of my favourites so far, and it is nice to see well-crafted art of it. I really enjoy the concept of the portrait changing with sin and age rather than the person in a 'be careful what you wish for' scenario~

The 1945 movie is amazing . . . they actually did parts of the movie with the portrait colorized to make the impact even greater. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pict⦠(scroll down to see the final version of the painting in all it's glory, or don't if you don't want it spoiled )

I found out about Dorian Gray through the movie League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, which stars other literary characters, and found out later my mom actually owned the book. Tried reading it once, but I think the writing style threw me off. Maybe I'll try again someday.
I like how cinematic the illustration is. The way the portrait's image is shadowed seems to show how Dorian really is under his calm expression.

I so LOVE this book!!! wonderfully creepy and thought-provoking... I read it for the first time at university and I've re-read it twice since... I think the charas are so interesting, too...
and I LOVE your drawing, too!!! subtle, tiny difference, yet a pivotal one... the composition and contrasts really highlight what you want to show!!

I have read this book once, as part of an assignment for middle school, and it was really something.Β I went through a sort of emotional roller coaster ride as I read the book.Β When I was first introduced to Dorian Gray in the story, I was enamored by him.Β I was like any girl with her first crush.Β But then, his portrait starts doing things it shouldn't and that's when his nature begins to repel instead of attract.Β By the time I was a few chapters away from completing the book, I found myself wondering how I had ever liked Dorian; he disgusted me by then.Β I almost didn't want to finish the book, but I had to because it was a school assignment.Β Finish it I did and got a bit of a shock when he was dead at the end and I was suddenly sad that he was.Β Pretty wacky, right?
