Description
Woo! After months of slaving away, I have finally finished!Sometimes I'll get a weird concept/story in my head that I just HAVE to get out on drawing paper.
And, usually as I draw/color my drawings I add more and more to the story as I work.
Then when it's done, I think their personality and stories can almost be seen in their eyes.
The insect lived a lonely life out in the wilds of his planet, farming animals and growing plants far from civilization.
He knew he was sad and sick of loneliness, but what's an insect to do that must devote his life to his work? (such is the way of insects).
One day while dropping off food to a nearby community, he found a baby human girl. He was reluctant at first, but decided to take her home with him.
He's raising her like any good insect; community, obedience, loyalty to the royalty. And, so far she's been a very good insect, and they love each other so much.
But still there is always a fear at the back of the insect's mind that his lovely daughter will leave him one day to investigate human life and leave him forever.
Luckily, there is no sign of it now - she even wants to look like an insect! He made her the green jump-suit and did her hair up like his own cranium. (He already thinks she's perfect, but she insisted)
Whatever may come, they are happy now. And, he will always be her loving father... more loyal to her than any Queen.
The picture shows them on the way home after harvesting some eggs. Who knows what he's telling her? Something sweet, no doubt. :3
And that's the little story born of a little idea and sketch. It's not a novel or any story I'll pursue writing... just a little bit of my own folklore. A little getaway into my own imagination.
Uhm... maybe I should start listing the things I use to do my art because people always ask.
Drawn on regular printer paper with a mechanical pencil, scanned into the computer and re-lined/colored in Photoshop by mouse. (I tried using a tablet the other day. Woo, I don't know how you guys do it!)

Thanks!
I've only worked on the artwork for one children's book. It's icelandic and called "Worm pranker and the little Indian".

I love the painting technique you used on this one. It's nice and smooth.I also like how the insect(to me) looks a bit scary, but also really friendly.I can see in his face expression that he'd do anything to protect the girl.I also really like the story.

It's nice to see a list of the tools used for such a wonderful picture, but I'm more glad you didn't do it instead of telling the insect's story; it would have been a waste not to hear it.

My oh my did this one ever turn out. I remember the sketch of this, but I had no idea of the direction you'd go with this. This is fantastic. Although you've centred the two you've balanced it out in opposition with colour, background placement and detail. I love how you basically used three colours in this but have varied it enough for it to seem distinct yet without it standing out too much. You also used, whether you realized it or not, these three colours to create a wonderful harmony; bringing in the green to pull the blues and yellows together. Above all this though it's the gentle tone of this image that really makes the piece.

This reminds me of a story idea I thought of long ago. It's lame in hindsight, but here goes:
It's about this kid who boards a one of those tourist spacecraft. The spacecraft crash-lands on this almost desert-like Marsy planet. There he befriends this alien who can inflate his muscles or soemthing.
Yeah, like I said, it's lame.

I'll be honest. This piece of art is phenomenal. I love the composition, the story behind it, the absolutely stunning coloring. It's so popping and realistic and at the same time it draws the audience in. You've done a wonderful job pulling this together, so youur hard work is welllll worth it. I'm very happy to finally see this done. (:

Just amazing work Z! The color scheme is beautiful as well as the details for the characters.
I tried using a tablet the other day. Woo, I don't know how you guys do it! It's called practice!
It's not easy, it really feels like you're relearning how to draw and paint at first...but it's worth it in the end.
But seriously, wonderful job!

I don't think it'll take you three years to get it going with the tablet...it'll take some time, just nonstop practicing and you're on your way!

Man, I remember seeing this sketch in your journal months ago (apparently) and I am astonished how well this all turned out. Not only did you manage to design both characters wonderfully, you also colored both of them exquisitely with nary a line in sight--only contrasts in colors and shading. These elements, in addition to the very tender interaction depicted, really bring the characters to life. The story was a nice addition (to hear the details and to understand what was on your mind), but I think the picture could narrate their story perfectly on its own. This is months well spent. Truly a masterful work.
